Derbeno great job on that restoration, the drum looks great and I bet it sounds just as good as it looks too.
yambu321 I'm really digging your Matador, beutiful drum. I know that this forum is set up for Matados but I must say, that Isla looks wicked!!!!!!!!!!! I bet they all sound FIRME :P !
By the way, what's the story behind all of the signatures on that other Matador?

You guys are giving me hope for what an old refinshed matador can look like when you take your time. But every good refinishing story needs a bad one. Here's a pic of my old beat up quinto (from the picnic pix above) after I tried to refinish it the first time. I wasn't paitient at all so i just painted it. Bright blue of course! UGHHH! So needless to say thats why I'm refinshing it again. What was I thinking???!!! :?

SAKUNTU,

IT'S FUNNY, BECAUSE YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE.

I DID THE SAME THING WITH MY FIRST TWO MATADOR'S ABOUT 6 YEARS AGO. THE ONLY REAL DIFFERENCE WAS THAT IT TOOK TIME AND PATIENCE. I DID MINE A LITTLE MORE TOWARDS PURPLE, WITH BLACK ACCENTS, AND CLEAR COATING IN POLY URETHANE.

AFTER ABOUT TWO YEARS, I STRIPPED THEM BACK DOWN TO THIER NATURAL WOOD.

KING CONGA,

THANKS FOR THE COMPLIMENT. THE LP MATADOR CONGAS, DO WORK VERY WELL, ALONG WITH THE ISLA'S.

THE MATADOR WITH ALL THE SIGNATURE TYPE WRITING WAS ALL DONE BY ME. IT IS MY PERSONAL, HISTORICAL THEME, CONGA CONCEPT DESIGN. IT HAS THE NAMES OF PLACES THAT I HAVE LIVED AS I WAS GROWING UP, TRUE FRIENDS, LOCAL BRONX, AND MAHATTAN GANGS OF THE 1960'S AND 70'S. MILITARY , PLACES OF THE WORLD THAT I HAVE VISITED AND OR PLAYED AT, MY TEACHERS, VENUES, INSPIRATIONAL FIGURES, ETC,ETC AND ETC. IT'S PRETTY COOL.

HERE'S AN OLD PHOTO OF THAT 'CONGA. IT IS CURRENTLY BEING REDONE IN ORDER TO MORE CLOSELY MATCH MY NEW OLD SCHOOL THEME CONGA. IN TOTAL THERE ARE THREE DRUMS IN THIS SET SO FAR. I WILL POST THE PHOTOS OF THE OTHER TWO AS THEY ARE COMPLETED. ALL THREE WILL HAVE SOME WRITING AS WELL.

THANKS AGAIN,
CHARLIE. 8)

IN ORDER TO ENLARGE THIS PHOTO, PLEASE CLICK RIGHT ON THE CONGA. THIS WILL HELP YOU READ ALL THAT IS WRITTEN ON THAT SIDE, OF THIS BEAUTY.

MARCO,
THANKS BRO, FOR YOUR SUPPORT. I HOPE THAT YOU'LL SOON FIND THE DRUMS YOU'VE BEEN WAITING FOR, FOR THAT EXTRA SPECIAL PROJECT, YOU WOULD LIKE TO DO. :D

DERBENO,
YOU'VE DONE A FANTASTIC JOB ON YOUR MATADORS!
I'VE SEEN, AND HEARD, THEM BOTH TOGETHER AT THE DANCE STUDIO, WITH YOSVANNIE, A FEW MONTH'S AGO. (MOZAMBIQUE!!!), REMEMBER. :D

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN,
PLEASE CONTINUE TO POST PHOTO'S OF YOUR BELOVED LP MATADOR CONGAS.

THANKS YOU,

DERBENO,

HEY BRO, WHERE WERE YOU ABLE TO AQUIRE THE SHELL PROTECTORS FOR YOUR MATADORS.
I TRULY WOULD LIKE TO GET THE SAME TYPE YOU HAVE FOR MY DRUMS. THE CURRENT LP BRAND PROTECTORS ARE SMALL AND TO BE HONEST, A LITTLE TOO CHEEZY FOR MY TASTE.

THANKS, BRO.

Hi Charlie,
I´m not Derbeno, but they look like being from Meinl.
The LP protectors went off my congas - they were a total nuisance and a waste of money IMHO.
Check out the Meinls!

Greets

Agreed, Steven,

the LP protectors look a bit corny or even worse - like a lifebuoy or wobbly handcuffs (just a fantasy)
but the Meinl protectors are better because they are hardly noticeable in a way - and they do a great job!

As a side thought: If you´re after the "real" vintage look, there is not really a place
for anything like comfort curve rims, water buffalo heads and shell protectors IMO.
I do understand very well though that you want conga beauties like Derbeno
and Charlie´s Matadors being protected from unnecessary nicks ´n´scratches.

Mike
