Well, I decided to go with with Michael at L&H. Very knowledgeable and helpful. New skins are in the mail. I'll post the results.

I have been in touch with Drum Skulls. They are expert in African drums (Djembe, Djuns, etc..). Although they have been helpful and responsive the congas are a new thing for them.

Thanks to all for your input.

Well, I tucked the quinto and she rocks! Now the ringing is in my ears from the sharp slaps :P
I'll try and get a photo up and tuck the conga and tumba soon too.

I did some recording yesterday and tried to use the conga (still has original skin) and it was very noticeable. Not good! had to opt for the Caribbean Rhythms conga for the session, but did use the Drumskull quinto, sounded great!

Gotta call L&H for some more of them skins for the Caribbean Rhythms set.

I've only used mule skin once on a quinto, great sound, having said that I'm not sure if I'd want mule on all my drums, it has a particularly dry sound that while it does tame the ring, it doesn't have a lot of resonance, that's whay it sounds great on a quinto cranked up. Anyways let us know how it comes out, another great source of skins is Bill Confer right here in texas, great work, i usualy order full sides from him and can get about six solid rounds from a side.
