Most likely you have already tried rotating the skin to see if it fits in any orientation. Put the skin in the rim, and try to find the original orientation out of the 5 or 6 possible orientations with respect to the lug placement. Most likely the skin changed shape slightly during its time off the drum, maybe due to humidity or how it was stored. I would still recommend very carefully partially soaking the skin and re-fitting it damp, as discussed above.
Hi Congabluedog, I want to make you aware of the Ibiono Project, a percussion and dance class by Roman Diaz and Yesenia Selier in NYC on Tuesdays from 6 to 9. I posted details in another post of that title. Yesenia has done a monthly Tambo with a mostly women bata and rumba group, some of whom will be participating in these classes. This is a great opportunity, check it out. PM me for details. Jorge
Leedy Thanks for the offer. I am working summer school and often have my niece on weekends...But who knows I may make it out there. I definitely would love to see you again. I will try rotating heads for better orientation and wetting the head. I would love the old skin to be back on the drum.
Jorge....I think I met Roman Diaz...I have to see what he looks like. I also might have seen those women Bata drummers play. John Amira was gracious enough to let me play with him at the Djoniba Dance studio near Union Square. I played with him for about a year. We also sometimes went to a dance center in the upper west side. I think I saw them play for a dance class in there.
Anyway..I have been studying bongos with George Delgado . I had to stop for a couple of months on account of some personal problems but would like to continue with bongos for a while. Most of my background has been folkloric...now working on Son, Marcha....In fact the night I posted about Tata's Rauls, I was actually working on Miguel Anga's 5 drum Marcha and variations....the stuff is so beautiful. I went to congaplace to find some links for Anga and then I saw the Tata Guines stuff.
Anyway thanks all the for info and suggestions. Jacqui
