Is that the only difference between them? The whole point of this thread was that I didn't know, which is why I'm asking :-)

The Palladiums are like 2" taller. But you should get the general idea on how the Gio and the Classics sound.

Replying to myself. Here's a comparison of the Palladiums vs. Galaxy Gio's.

Looks like it's 32-inches vs. 30-inches and the steel bands. Both are ash wood. Personally, I like bands.

Not trying to steer your decision as I have nothing to do with this company at all, but if I was going to spend the kind of money they are asking for Giovanni LP drums, I would order a set of these:

Just my opinion.

VGA congas will have a deeper bass tone than these LPs. The FAT BELLY and fine calfskin heads will do this!

There are few congas available new today that will rival VGA for the FAT BELLY contest. Also there are the bands, 1/2 round crown and Stainless Steel hardware all around. This attention to detail is truly impressive!

Another 2 cents...

I ended up getting four Gio's for the price of one-and-a-half.

Just a wrap-up here to this thread... here's the differences that I notice between the Gio's and the Classics.

- The Giovanni Galaxy drums have an extended collar, which seems to give the head a bit more sustain. This also gives a small amount more fundamental pitch.
- The Classics have a bit less bass when doing a palm or bass tone; the body of the drum seems just a bit more narrow, but not by much.
- The Gio's have less overtone issues than the Classics.. honestly, they're hardly audible, but I do condition my heads with lanolin, which dampens the overtones.
- The Classics are 1-2 pounds lighter, per drum.

Does anyone know when LP stopped making the Giovannis out of oak? I talked to a lady that has a conga and tumba she wants to sell because she doesn't have time for them anymore. She said that she purchased them in the 90's and that they are made out of oak. I'm not sure when the ash wood came into play. Tried searching but, there is so much on the forum about Giovanni congas.

I think the oak congas and bongos came out in the early 90's and they were just plain Galaxy.
I have a Galaxy oak bongo made in 1993. I think they put Giovanni on them much later like
late 90's or 2000.

From what I heard the Galaxy Oak drums had some issues with the conditioning of the wood and cracking, then they shifted to the giovannis in ash.
