Hey Vinne,
Its best to use some plywood under the tambores !! Carpet will kill the tone, unless you are trying to be quiet?

I use plywood rounds per drum for gigging/rehersals-always, ya never know what type of stage or amenities are available.
For home use I use a 4x4 sheet of plywood. yummy :D

Thanks Vinnie, all 3 are International models 3414. Not sure when they started the inlaid bands on the oak, but from the looks of the serial #s, the conga and tumba on the left were made long before the quinto with the band.

QUESTION about Gon Bops head sizes

Postby Mike » Wed Apr 29, 2009 8:25 am

deadhead wrote:My Oak Gon Bops...

Fantastic drums!

If you do not mind, I have one question about the sizes:
Were the older 1970s Gon Bops head sizes for conga and tumba
like 10.75 and 12.5" respectively?
I have seen an offer with these head sizes declared as conga and tumba
and just wanted to know. I do know that Gon Bops have different sizes than other
companies, but a 10.75" head size sounds like a quinto to me. But again I might be
mistaken, as I have never had any contact with or info about GB.

Thanx
-Mike

Thanks for the compliments Mike! The sizes are 9.75 quinto, 10.75 conga, and 11.5 tumba. The subject of Gon Bops and their sizing has come up here a few times. Their sizes aren't what you would normally consider traditional. Most would call this setup requinto, quinto, conga. However, I guess due to their shape, the sound matches their labels. My 11.5 tumba is DEFINITELY a tumba, the sound is warmer and lower than any LP tumba I've ever owned. And just the same, the quinto is not what you'd expect out of a 9.75 drum, very warm with no ringy overtones like you'll find from a LP requinto of the same size.

I found a 13.5" super tumba that I will be picking up today or tomorrow :D , can't wait to finish off the set!
