Re: QUESTION about Gon Bops head sizes

deadhead wrote:Thanks for the compliments Mike! The sizes are 9.75 quinto, 10.75 conga, and 11.5 tumba. The subject of Gon Bops and their sizing has come up here a few times. Their sizes aren't what you would normally consider traditional. Most would call this setup requinto, quinto, conga. However, I guess due to their shape, the sound matches their labels. My 11.5 tumba is DEFINITELY a tumba, the sound is warmer and lower than any LP tumba I've ever owned. And just the same, the quinto is not what you'd expect out of a 9.75 drum, very warm with no ringy overtones like you'll find from a LP requinto of the same size.

I found a 13.5" super tumba that I will be picking up today or tomorrow :D , can't wait to finish off the set!

A-ha, thanks for the enlightenment! :D
So if I get you right, a Gon Bops 10.75 conga and 11.5 tumba combination does makes sense,
especially as far as tonal qualities are concerned.
Well, I am laying my eyes on those two vintage beauties I told you about then - wish me luck...
And congrats to your 13.5" find - wow, what a complement, it must sound gorgeous!

Best regards and thanks again
Mike

If you look at my last picture, thats a 10 3/4" Gon Bop segundo size conga (not a quinto) behind the shekeres.
You can see the same drum here on the left and a Gon Bops 9 3/4" quinto on the right.
It is more about the shape than size.

Hey Geordie,
you have really got quite a bunch of GBs now, haven´t you? :)
You seem to have gotten fond of those slim beauties.

As I said, I try to get my hands on some 1970s Gon Bops
in fair condition - yep, I´m a 70s man

A new pic including my new addition the Pearl Marc Quinones timbales. The 2 congas on top of each other in the middle are not mine they belong to a friend who is picking them up soon i'm just holding on to them for him. The other six are mine.

As to Gon Bops again: Currently there is a nice set of three, still at low price at ebay that
resemble Deadhead´s. I am not to sure about the metal bands with the drum in the middle though.
The Item number is: 190304913651

Yeah I saw those, they are all gon bops for sure, except he is giving them
the wrong names for the sizes, it's 2 congas and a tumba.
The metal bands are 100% original without a doubt. Though this is the
first one I have seen with the metal bands and an inlaid wood band as well.

A pretty good set, the tumbas are hard to get a hold of,
and the oak drums are the ones to get.

BNB, why oak?
I've been lurking for an old set of Gon Bops for a while but thought that mohogany was the more desirable wood.
Whats the difference as far as sound?
I really like what you did with that quinto on the right. I saw when you posted the project.
I could go for that look if I ever got my hands on some.
I think I would experiment with some custom bands. The original ones are Ok but those wood ones don't look good to me no matter how I look at them.

The oak ones tend to hold up a little better over time, and they are louder and crisper. Mahogany GB's are also good, woodier and a little quieter.
The mahogany wood is a little on the soft side.
Custom bands are pretty difficult to make, unless you are an experienced metal worker.
The restoration of that GB quinto of mine was a fun project that turned
out real well.

.....and to keep the thread on topic....a set of drums I wished I owned.

Hi there all

Greetings from Denmark. Here is a couple of pictures of my LP Congas, the one with the red bottom/white top, was actually blue at the bottom, but i painted it to try and match the two others.
Notice that they are all three different heights, anyone know why ?, and maybe how old they are ? Anyway, i love playing them, but it is hard to find quality skins here...

What do you think guys, should i paint them all with fresh red/white colours ?

All the best
