A question for RitmoBoricua about the video where Dandy Rodriguez play bongos.
What bongos does he use and what type of heads does he use? If that is synthetic skins it sounds very good. I am considering changing skins on my Matadors, so perhaps I should get these.

Dandy is using his signature bongos, he is a personal friend and he told me he uses Remo Nuskin on the macho. In my opinion, Dandy is the best bongocero in the business and has been for the last 30 yrs., he sounds great on anything he plays.

Thanks for the info. I absolutely agree with you. The finest bongocero since Jose Mangual. On the top of my drumming wishlist is a DVD, solely devoted to Dandy Rodriguez and his bongos.

Reminds me if I am not mistaken that in Cuba there were periods of times that the afro-cuban drums were forbidden and the workers at the docks started playing rumbas on shipping crates and boxes hence "Rumba De Cajon". I saw once Giovanni Hidalgo on this show in Puerto Rico were the host of the show thought he was going to trick Giovanni. The host wanted Giovanni to jam on cooking pots and pans. Giovanni made them pots and pans sing. To me when you ready to jam o "rumbear" you play whatever is available. No wonder the slaves in Cuba and other places were using cowbells and other farm tools on their jams/rumbas, they used what was available and made them sound good.

Dandy is the most recorded latin percussionist. Most Fania recordings featured Dandy on congas, most times credits were omitted. Dandy is the bongocero you hear in Joe Cuba's recordings, he was never part of the sextet ,but when albums were recorded he was the bongocero, again no credit mentined. Dandy is the only musician to have played and recorded with the "BIG 3" (Machito,Puente and Rodriguez). He started playing professionaly when he was 13, most kids that age concentrate on "Little League". His father, Johnny "La Vaca", was a great bongocero as well, his mom Tati, was the best Palladium mambo dancer. John Dandy Rodriguez, an usung hero in Latin music.

This is one thing that I don't understand. Why would the recording companies not give credit to the musicians, engineers, facility and the actual composer, arrangers?

Most older "Latin" genre recordings are so secretive. They do seem to be getting better, since many are working under US recording companies with requirements.

Fania Records was a U.S. recording company and from what I hear just like most U.S. recording companies they ripped-off their talent quite often.

What a shame. Seems worse in " our" genre than most? And Latin genre musicians are said to be more competant.

Lots of times on those Fania recordings even when credits were given some of the credits were wrong.
You could not even trust the credits when they were given on the record covers.

yes in deed, reminds me of the old Telephone game in school, you end up with something completely different from what you started with. My daughter called said i got two big boxes in today, so my NewOld LPs got in, can't wait to get off work to see what i got myself into.

Well - from synthetic skins to bongo, Danny Rodriguez, discussion about who is the greatest over to Fania down to almost the history of Cuban music, this thread about my LP resto has seen it all...
I do not know if I like this kind of evolution, but I do know I should have posted here in the first place,
to be a bit safer from all the hackers  viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4064&hilit=conga+makeovers

Anyway, all this threadjacking ain´t really funny at times - come on guys, let´s get organized!
Peace & drum
