i didn't sand the bottom of the conga all the way down as you can see, but it will be covered by the rubber ring that gets glued back on. i did sand the tumba all the way down and as you can see it took the stain better. lessons learned.

GuruPimpi, I can't wait to play them already! I've been hurting this whole time wanting to play! it's looking like it's been worth it though. thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement etc.. I still have to let the stain dry, poly them, steel wool, poly, refit the heads, let that dry then finally start breaking the heads in again. I'm looking at another week with no real play :( . That and it's time to contact Isaac for a couple more mules for the quinto and tumba, although I was thinking about maybe a nice steer for the tumba. i'm not sure which I should do.. Here's a pic of the mule I have on the conga.

If the hardware is an accurate indicator, These are sonor champion congas. The wood is Heavea (rubber) wood...yes they do sound very good. I have three of them because I liked the first one so much. The heads were twice as thick as the other entry level congas I've played. I have been thinking about refinishing mine to a color very similar to your new one...I guess I should. I will probably use Johnson paste wax for a satin finish instead of gloss.

God bless!

Bongoron. How are you. You should go for it. With a new wood finish you'll feel much better about your drums, personalizing them this way is giving me satisfaction. plus the old lady is loving how they look like nice furniture now lol. i haven't finished them yet though. they've gotten darker since yesterday as they have dried. i have a clear satin finish that i need to put on. i bought a spray and i'm not so sure if thats what i want to use or if i should instead hand rub it on. if anyone has any opinions on that please let me know. Bongoron as far as what brand they are when i bought them the stickers on the drums were Baja. I'm sure that these drums are all coming from the same place anyway. although the skins were crap and had to be changed out immediately. i'm currently looking for metal workers locally who might be able to do some new hardware for me. it's a stretch but we'll see depending on cost. one word of advice to all who are thinking about doing this as a project- take your time sanding! you can't hide a crappy sand job. i found out the hard way!

This is true...I have painted cars, guitars and motorcycles over the years, and believe me, the sanding is the hardest part of painting/refinishing. Even after the paint or clearcoat...it's the sanding that makes it what it will be. With all of them, the cleaning between sanding is just as critical. Yes, I trhink I will go for it when it wrms up here. I have a sunburst finish on mine that contains a band of red and a dark brown I don't care for I may follow a sunburst theme, but much less flashy in a single color like yours...very nice. Have you had trouble with the harfdware? Mine is tuning up quite high with no ill effects.

God bless!

bongoron, it's cold there too still huh? it was warmer in march up here! weird. anyway the hardware as held up fine so far. i tuned the tumba up high just to see and it was perfect. the conga and quinto tune up quite well also. i'm more worried about the rims than the side plates and bolts. they're that zinc plated crap. but tuning up so far no problems at all, which reminds me to go buy lug lube tonight!
suave!
