Take a look at:

http:\\www.recording.org

It includes a Musician Forum, under which is a dedicated, moderated sub-forum "Drums and Percussion".

...and check out the Audix web site, which in the US is

http:\\www.audixusa.com

Their D2 mic is recommended for conga. The site includes a PDF file for percussion applications, and at the end of that application brochure they show & tell how to place their mics for congas, both for studio and live. In short, mic is at 12 o'clock, 2" (5cm) in from the rim, 2" (5cm) off the head, and at 90 degrees to the head.
