Hello to all,

I am in the process of purchasing a set of Congas and I've done some internet research and some hands on demo. I have played the new LP 40th Aniversary Congas at a local music shop and I found that they sound extremely good when they are kept on the floor, and can produce loud sound when they are up in a basket stand. They are expensive but I am sure they are justified in their price.

I have also seen a set of 3 congas from Schalloch on sale at Musicianfriend for $260.00 including the basket stands. I know that they are non-standard sized, but apart from this - are they decent congas or pure crap that I will be horrified that I purchased.

A 3 piece LP 40th will set me back $1100.00 which I can swing but are they that noticeablely better than the Schallochs?

I have also been reading on this board that the fiberglass congas will last a lifetime but the wooden ones will crack and split over time. Is the benefit of fiberglass worth the loss of the "Conga" warm sound that I experienced at the music shop with the 40th LP's? Or are the fiberglass congas just as warm and the sound more subjective?

Many times we over pay, especially well known brands, but than again, you try it and decide upon your feel of music, for what, where... you will use this item and amount of money...

My opinion is: if you need the best, buy the best. I like having GOOD and SOLID instrument, which fills me with the joy when I hit it. I want to thrust my gear, if that means a little more money, so be it. It's for my needs to feel good!

40th Anniversary LP tumbas are just Classic model congas with a new finish, the price is due to the novelty of them being 40th anniversary drums.
Ask how much for Classic's and you will most likely save yourselft a fair bit of $$$$

And yes, I would say LP has it all over the afore mentioned brand.

Ive used LP Classics for over 10 yrs and were great, no problems, no chips or cracks (Itake care of my drums) and Ive only recently upgraded toa set of LP Palladium series tumbas, I love the warm sound of the wood congas. I couldve chosen any LP drum, but I went with the wood models due to the warm earthy tones. Fibreglass I found nice and loud, also light drums, but far too many ringy overtones for my liking.

Go out there, tune up and play a few models in the shop and go with what you like the best.

The new (better) Schalloch congas are now being offered on musicians friend.
They appear to have a fat look with a lot of tuning rods.

I'm so happy - I've finally found a place to say how awful, how just plain nasty, sour, untune-able and ringy, the Shalloch pair that I got from Musicians Friend turned out to be. Being out in the middle of nowhere, I had to buy without a chance to play or hear, and there were all kinds of rave "reviews" on the site that suckered me in. The stands have been useful for other drums, and I got a great deal on Gator bags because I bought the set, but the drums themselves? Purely decorative. I still have the quinto (nobody will buy it), and people get upset if I even bring it to a drum circle. Ever notice there's no customer feedback on Musicians Friend? I was a newbie player when I bought these and I really thought it was my fault, so I didn't send them back or complain then, kept hoping I'd find a way to make them play decently. Not a chance.

Man that sucks!
Hopefully you can manage to get your hands on a descent set of Congas soon. Keep in mind that there is always craigs list, if you are patient you can realy find some great deals there.
