I get the impression from this forum and past posts that muleskin is the best replacement head, though some would argue the point. I have a set of SamAsh Ardientes, and though I realize SamAsh/LP percussion doesn't rank high on the list of this forums pros, they're quite serviceable. Though still in excellent shape am looking to replace the standard LP stock rawhide heads with those that may give me a bit more crispness, and make the most of the beautiful Siam oak shells. I know technique is a factor, but setting that aside for a moment, if these were your drums, what-if any- heads would you use for replacement? And yes, I'm even open to considering plastic.

I prefer Mule, they toughen your hands up and have a crisp, clean, warm and dry sound.

I find that factory pre-mounted skins are a hit and miss... Sometimes you'll luck out and other times your S.O.L.

I've noticed that depending on the climate in which you live is a huge factor as well... Plastic or even the concoction Remo put together on the NyuSkin material is good for winter playing. Natural skins will flex depending on the current climate of the year.

Personally, I change my bongo heads from Natural to Nyuskin during the winter. This only because bongos have to be tuned pretty tight and during the winter I don't want to wear too much the natural skins.

My personal preference is Mule Skin on both congas and bongos. Water Buffalo is good, but make it is just the right thickness and consider mounting it yourself.
