I bought this recently - a bit of a restoration project, but even in its sadly cracked state it sounds pretty sweet.

Questions:

Make? (Gon Bops, right?)
Year?
Wood? (Mahogany or oak?)

Anything else you think I might want to know?

I could said that it is pretty big to be a quinto,it looks more like a conga,it have been make with the old style,but the year could be tricky since there are individuals making this instruments with the old style,it have five rods so it was made after the 50's,(but it is older than the 70's).The type of wood also could be tricky since the color of the finished product could be added in the (Barnizado),kind of waxing.The only way of being sure is by looking the inside part of the drum.(to locate the type of wood)...Dr. Zaragemca

It's definitely a quinto (9.5" head). The head looks bigger than it is because of the wide angle camera lens. I took a closer look at the color of the wood inside and is really much darker than oak and doesn't seem stained or anything, so I'm leaning toward calling it mahogany at this point. I heard that Gon Bops used to get some kind of Fillipino wood that they called mahogony but was really something different. Anyone know anything about that?

I believe it's an early Gon Bop, the hardware tells me that. The shape is similar to a Gon Bop too. Is it heavy or light? If' it's light it's possible philapine mahogony or oak if it's heavy. It was probably made in the 60's...."JC" Johnny Conga...ps is there a hoop (alma) on the inside top of the drum?....

The pic leads me to believe its an early Gon Bop re-quinto or super quinto. Hardware, shape and form of the drum is typical of Gon Bop.

I realised its a wide lens cause of the base of the drum and things appearing in the background. :cool:

It could not be 60's,..Gon Bop started making this Congas in the 70's,also the hardware is the one telling me that it got to be older than 70.If it is 9.5, and made to be a Quinto,it was done by somebody which at that time didn't know how to make Quintos. Dr. Zaragemca

Well for someone who doesnt know how to make a quinto, it looks like a h e l l of a good old school drum.

Obviously standard quinto is 11" by todays standard.
The particular drum photographed looks to be re-quinto or super quinto in dimension.

It's quite light. And no hoop inside the top of the drum.
