Hello.
When it comes to recording Congas.
1. Are there any special points to remember when recording ??
2. Best placement of microphones.??
3. What mic's work best for Congas. ??

gday, recording congas can a be a difficult and rewarding experience. Experiment with mic placement. hve one mic for each drum close proximity, a room mic to pic up the ound of the drums in the room ( different rooms will give different sounds), one mic between two congas. When in the studio I have seen many engineers use 2 mics on two congas. they are placed about 30-45cm away from the congas, but keep in mind that they have to be closer to gether then thaey are away from the drums, so as not to get phase cancelation. Many of hte older recording were done with one room mic and it gave the music great life and "air".
in a live setting I use one mic per congas and have it about 1 inch out and 2 inch up. I have found that with the tuning that i use on my mongo santamaria's congas it works best. what mic you ue is also an important considereration, as mic have ' a proximity effect'. that is, the closer they are placed to the source the more bass. A little bass is good, to much can make it sound muddy when recorded. I used CAD mics, they are very good for the work that I am doing.
