Ok, this sounds like a silly question, but how do I apply lug lube? I have a set of Pearl Elite congas and bongos. One lug on the tumba is making a bit of a screech and another lug on the hembra is screeching. So how do I get the lube into the lugs? Should I loosen them to the maximum (without actually removing the heads), apply lube on the screw and then re-tune or what?
Thanks!

whats up nochops,
i usually take the nuts off and run the lube around the inside of the thread just be careful when tightening the lugs back up making sure you tighten them up even. conga KID

I normally stay away from lug lube (LP) as it leaves a nasty residue which will come on to your trousers if you play seated as the lugs rub up against you... And you will find grime and dirt getting attached to the lugs and getting in the thread over time.
Try to spray a dab of WD-40 inside the nut or on the lug towards the nut and let it seap into the thread, then dry up any excess with a dry clothe.
If you must use lug lube, try as congakid has suggested, however if you cannot remove or find that tightning or loosening the nut is too hard, try a drop or 2 just above the nut, and let it seep in, then try gently to tighten or loosen the nut again till you get some ease of movement, ideally you should remove the nut, and clean the lugs thoroughly in order to remove any grime which has accumilated over time, this will prevent you from robbing the thread on the lugs and make tuning/untuning easier and preserve your hardware.

I love them. Just yesterday a friend of mine was over and told me they sound fantastic, and I would have to agree. Highly recommended!

Mr. NoChops,
Glad you like your Pearl Elites... they do sound great! My five cents on this, agree with avoiding the lube because is messy, and like Abakua says, it gets all over the place, pants, hands, and worst to get rid of that other lubricants.
When applying any kind of lubricant and to do a good job, although I personally hated, is to take everything off, apply it carefully and take the opportunity to take anything that should not be there that gets accumulated, i.e., residues of iron, grease, dust, etc, to make sure the "squeaks" are gone and stop the problem in tuning caused by lack of lubrication.
I use WD 40 and what I do is with a cloth damped on it, clean the lugs, etc. I put a little bit in a cup and I dip the nuts and lugs on it so I get rid of the "black stuff" . Afterwards, I wipe everything to make sure they are clean and to make sure not too much of WD-40 is left to avoid too much residue is left and it does not get "all over the place." (The very first time you use your instrument again you will get some "greasy feeling" in your hands but is not as bad and most likely will go away after that gig. To avoid that greasy feeling the recommendation is to "wash or clean" everything with soap and that is defeating the purpose of the "lubrication" process...so have to live with it).
If lug lube, follow the same procedure (but no dipping...)
My 5 cents (or more actually) about the subject!
Saludos!

hey guys, has anyone else used bike grease. It bought it from a specialist bike shop. it is used to lubricated all the bearings when they put a bike together. Thick stuff, not runny and is also a dry lube, so that it doesnt attract dust. it comes in a toothpaste type bottle. nice stuff. has worked well on my mongos. I also got a pair of evans heads the other day. I know they are not liked very much inthis forum, but they actually sound very nice on the mongos. I guess perhaps due to their 2 stave construction as apossed to the LP 3 stave construction.
God Bless

I think that you should be in a committed relationship before you let someone lug lube your mongos!
