I've got a quinto and conga - meinl Marathon series which I bought second hand (very old, battered and the quinto was cracked and has been mended). I like the sound although it's quite difficult. Is it worth investing in new skins?
If the shells are still good, and sturdy, than yeah get new skins if you need them, some good skins will most definitely improve the sound of a conga... if your interested contact Isaac @ funkytradition@yahoo.com
he'll hook you up with a good cow, or mule skin...although the mule skin may be too strong for the drum if it does not have an alma (a metal ring inside the top of the shell which serves as reinforcement for the shell)... peace
i was thinking of buying some second hand old meinl drums but i got put off by the thin cracks right where the glue sits down the bottom so i chose to but new,i should have brought them and saved my money for an upgrade later.if you got a fairly good shell you need good skins i think it make a difference.
