hi EVERYONE . i HAVE A SET OF MATADOR CONGAS AND iM PREATY SATISFIED WITH THE SOUND BUT i PLAYED A SET OF the ARMANDO PERAZZA LP SERIES AND THEY SOUND F@@@@ AMAZING IS IT THAT THE QUALITY IS BETTER OR CAN I TUNE MINE TO GET THAT SOUND . TO EXPLAINE, IT SEEMS LIKEN IT TOOK LESS EFFORT TO PRODUCE SLAPS AND OPEN SOUND SO SWEET WARM ALL THE TONES SOUND GREAT AND THE SKINS RESPOND QUICKLY. WHEN THEY MAKE THIS SETS WITH A CERTAIN ARTIST IN MIND FOR EXAMPLE ARMANDO PERAZZA DOES E ACTUALLY TAKE PART IN THE DESIGN AND THE SOUND IT NEEDS TO PRODUCE? THAT SET IS VERY EXPENSIVE ABOUT 2 OR 3 GRAND.ANY FEEDBACK IS COOL. ALSO I KNOW THAT THEY ARE FIBERGLASS CERTAINLY THAT MAKES A BIG DIFFERANCE.

You speak of these correct?
Image

The LP Armando Peraza set are superior in finish and quality to Matador.
The skins are of a better quality too. Also, fibreglass can have more projection than wood, but thats what mic's are for.

Perhaps if you mounted some higher quality skins on your existing drums, your sound issues could be resolved. My friend has some wooden matadors, sounded ok, we changed the skins to some high end LP ones and now they sound great.
Mule skin is also quite good.
Again, proper technique and correct tuning helps.

Alafia Abures!
I most certainly concur with brother Abakua! That sometimes changing the skin (head) on a drum can make a whole lotta difference, both it the looks and sound. However, you must always keep in mind that technique is the critical element here.

I changed the skins on my LP Patato model drums, and everyone who hears them wants to play them. These particular skins I ordered from "Moperc" in Canada!

Many blessings!
(as JC says....."My two congas worth!")

Alafia EDSEG6ES!
If you are looking to purchase some skins for your Matador drums, you might want to check with Isaac, he's a representative with JCR: They have some great sounding skins!

funkytradition@yahoo.com

There is also Moper (http://www.moperc.com), although some of the folks I've sent to him say that they've had trouble getting a response from him. I don't seem to have any problem.

Suerte!

Be aware the Armando Peraza's, that actually is part of the Accents Series of congas that includes Santanas and others, are made in the Patato style....Big belly, small mouth, 30 inches tall (Same design for the Galaxy series including the Giovanni's).

Some people prefer this style some don't...it has some advantages....it has sharper tones than the regular LP (or Matadors), however, people complaint of the small mouth while playing seated...

SO ITS NOT ACTUALLY DESIGNED FOR A SPECIFIC ARTIST ITS JUST THERE NAME AND A DESIGN, THEY ACTUALLY DONT TAKE PART IN THE ACTUAL CONSTRUCTION AND DESIGN AS FAR AS THE SOUND,THE SKIN THE HARDWARE ETC .i THOUGHT THEY ACTUALLY ASK THE ARTIST WHAT CAN WE DO TO MAKE ITS FIT YOUR SPECIFIC NEEDS . THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE FOR YOUR KIND AND PROMT RESPONSES.

Well, if the artist had an input into it I do not know but if you check the link below you will see that is actually the same design as the Galaxy, that in turn is designed in the same shape of the Patato Model. (Galaxy fiberglass is reinforced with Kevlar. Peraza's model don't know if they got Kevlar or not).

http://www.lpmusic.com/Product_Showcase/Congas/lp_valje_armando_w.html

LP used to have a Valje Armando Peraza "classic style" cherry wood congas and bongos and now they have this new model in Fiberglass. (They discountinued using the Peraza and I think they have or used to have the "cherry wood" congas/bongos).

The Patato shape has been a hit for LP and perhaps the most used fiberglass conga ever.

If Armarndo had something in the design...don't know...I think currently the only congas made by LP that somebody had something to do with the design is the Giovanni Series, regular and Palledium. (Patato had something to do with "his" series too).

By the way, I love my new Pearl Bobby Allende Signature Series...I'll try to post pictures of them....They sound much better than the LP Galaxy's I used to have...Better priced too! Here I am sure the artist had something to do with it..The design is completly different than the other models made by Pearl and you could see it right away....Bigger mouth...big belly...28 inches for the seated player and perhaps the best comfort rims in the market right now! (They come with Remo Fyberskins from the factory....don't know if you like them but it gives them a great sound straight from the "box'). You should check them out!

Saludos!

The rims are polished steel...as good as stainless steel...The bottom in rubber??? Not a Pearl patent but is in all their congas...(I think Meinl has it also in some Marathon Models)... They sound much better than any "Patato" style model and I had some...These congas have the wide belly and bigger mouth....

Check them out in your local store!

These congas are the same as the Patato Series except I believe they are made like the Galaxy congas in that they have Kevlar in the Fiberglass.

As for sound, I have a set of Matador Fiberglass that have had Remo Nuskin heads on them for about a year and they sound superb. I also play a set of Patatos on Sunday, same shape, same heads as the Armandos and my Matadors sound better in my opinion. Louder, with more sustain. Never have to be tuned either :)
Control, for smilers cant be bought
