I PLAY ALONG TO MY CD'S SALSA AND LATIN JAZZ.SALSA IS PREATY EASY TO FOLLOW BUT SOME LATIN JAZZ TRACKS SEEM LIKE THERE IMPROVISING OR AD FILLS OVER ATUMBAO,SOME SOUND VERY COMPLICATED.ALSO AM I PLAYING IN CLAVE WHEN FOR EXAMPLE IM PLAYING A CERTAIN SONG MY TWO OPEN TONES FALL AT THE SAME TIME AS THE ARTIST PLAYING ON THE CD FOR EXAMPLE ONE OF MY FAVORITE SONG'S TO PRACTICETO IS WILLIE ROSARIOS "AREPENTIDOS PECADORES"IGOT DOWN ALL THE BREAKS AND THERES EVEN A CONGA SOLO PART WHERE IPRACTICE OVER THE CDS SOLO.THE SOLO PART IS TAKING ME A WHILE BUT IM NOT TRYING TO PLAY THE SOLO THATS ON THE CD I GIVE IT MY OWN SOLO.IS THIS CONSIDERD PLAYING IN CLAVE SINCE IM PLAYING EXACTLY THE SAME AS THE CONGA PLAYER ON THE CD IS PLAYING?IS THIS A BAD HABIT OR A GOOD WAY TO PRACTICE? ANY FEEDBACK IS HELPFULL THANKS FELLOW CONGUERO'S.
Is a good habit...Listening to music and playing along to emulate the parts is not a bad thing at all. We all doit or have done it. (See the answers to your post in the subject in OPEN DISCUSSION).
I find that listening to some of my favourite music really inspires my playing, like jamming with great musicians. What's even better though is finding Son/Salsa etc.. tracks without Conga or Bongo so you can add this layer on top. For instance there are quite a few Los Van Van records where the Conga was dispensed - you can add it!
