Schalloch Percussion? - Congas what do you think?

Hello guys what do you think about the Schalloch Percussion Congas as a low cost set?

I hadnt heard of them, as I use and endorse/reccomend LP.

Their first couple of congas on their site (I Imagine is their top of the line) look good, seem fairly strong. No idea how they sound or what sort of quality they are though.

How are they priced in comparison to LP, Pearl, Meinl etc...
I like the look of the linea 420's.

Yeah the top of the line models look like some really good sets, but I was looking more on the lower line the prices are that of a little less then say the Meinl headliners for sunburst models, but they have a honey amber set thats 1/2 the price of the sunburst models, like you said they look good the skins look like they are decent even if they might be changed to something by remo. But like anything looks can kill, I guess one would have to step out by faith and see if its worth it. On the other hand a set of aspires would run around the same price the only difference would be the deal I saw with the honey amber's was a 11 and a 12 Tumba the aspires you get a 10 and 11... just jugling ideas, last thing I tried was a cheap cheap verve set "DONT DO THAT" big no no, it was something to hit on but the skins and quality of them was really nothing to speak of in the least. So basiclly what Im trying to avoid is the same mistake twice with trying to save money. Maybe the smart thing to do would be to get an aspire set and then later get a 12' at least that way I would know I got somthing decent before hand.

Gday mate. I wouldn't go near them.

I have tried them at several shops, the heads are not much chop. they may look good on a website but in real life they are not the same. Go for the meinls if price is a concern.

There are a lot of smaller companies making instruments from second hand goods and hand me downs from the top companies / manufacturers.

Sorry if it sounds harsh, but it is better to be honest. I would prefer you get a set that is going to inspire you to play.

They are made by Meinl.....(who also distributes them)....

I saw their Congas at Pure Sound store in Bayamon but since I am not a Conga player I can not said good or bad. On the other half I saw one of their Bongos I guess the top model and they are solid constructed and the hardware is heavy and thicker than in other famous brands. The only thing are the heads like in most other mass produce equiment they have to be upgrade.

I had a student who purchased a tumbadora from them, I'm not sure if it necessarily was their top of the line or not, but it had what seemed to be a well built body (similar to LP Classics, and same wood too), but the hardware was more like LP Aspires. After listening to it, and playing on it for all of a minute or two, I would certainly recommend for anyone who had a similar model to change the head on it.

I had never heard of these drums prior to this student of mine.

Well the lower lines that im refering to have the LP comfort curve design hardware... the wood is the same from the lower line to the higher line the difference I asume is in the hardware and maybe the heads. But maybe if one got a set and changed the heads to some remo heads might make a good set. that was my first thought in this. now I dont know which dirrection to go, I think the deciding factor will be how much money I got at the time I decide to buy.

Bataboom if you cannot spend a little extra wait until you can . Drums are a big investment , but most of all you have to get a pair that will satisfy your ears. I have had a pair of meinl exclusives for about 5 years now , Meinl is a great company , but their heads are buffalo skin and kind of thin. Try to get the best that you can afford and do not get the bottom of the line of what ever you buy . You will regret it later on when you get better at playing them . THats my two cents , B'cause i'm still kicking myself in the but for not buying the meil mongo signature series then . I had the opportunity to buy 3 used drums for 900 bucks but did'nt b'cause i wanted new drums with no cosmetic defects .

Thanks for the tip, I hear what your saying I could kick myself for the last time I baught the set of cheap verve's.

I also hear you about getting as good a set as you possiblly can, I think I will try for a set of LP aspire I know thats not mid or high line I would rather a Galaxy set but I can not afford that no matter how long I wait. My thoughts are getting a 10' and 11' quint and conga with out stands to save on $$$ for now then later get a 12' and if I need stands I can always get that later as well.

If you cannot afford 2 for now just buy 1, but get something that is quality that you can add too when you get more cash and have a nice set. I would look for a used LP Classic or a matador tumba- might find a deal. If you are gigging its kind of tough w/ just one but I would try to buy something with good sound.

Hi Bataboom,

I'd totally avoid getting a 10" and 11" pair - not worth it. Aim to get an 11" quinto or a 11 3/4" Conga - if you can only get one decent drum now.

what about a 11 and a 12 now and a 10 later? What do most people get in a 3 set a 10 11 and 12 right?
