Hello all,
Has anyone heard of a LA-based conga company called Isla Percussions? Their drums are hand-crafted and I cannot find any other info on them. I would like to know more about their reputation and sound...
Thanks!

Those Volcanos are certainly beautiful, but I think what Jump3223 is talking about is a different maker, one in California, not Hawaii:

I have a set of Isla's I bought earlier this year. They have real nice tones and the construction is good. They are made out of Alameda wood, and the heads are tight. I had some LP Classics that I got rid of which were nice, mainly because of the heads I had put on them, but the Islas have much better sound. I dont have an Isla quinto though- If anyone is interested I can give you the info of the guy I bough them through. He gave me a pretty good deal too. I will post a pic later. Ache.

Thanks for the feedback!
So, SVSRUMBERO, do you find that your Islas have an earthier and deeper sound better for rumberos; or a more "punchy" tone that better accommodates salsa or other types of music, even funk? Or both?
Best,
J

I am interested in hearing more about Islas percussion as well. The design and construction look great from the pictures that I have seen. What is the contact info for the guy you purchased them from?

The construction is very similar to Valje's tumbas before they were taken over by LP, and the harware is all stainless steel as the hoop that hook goes through is welded on -like Fat Congas design. These tumbas are definatly more earthy with deep tones used for rumba, and the heads sound tight. The tones sound almost identical, when tuned right, to Yoruba Andabo's sound in a lot of the rumba cajon with the tumba openings. I play mostly folkloric on them, but I have used them in gigs with salsa and timba bands and they sound great. I am looking for the contact info will post it asap.
