i posted another question related to this but couldnt find it again,
my guitar center sales people informed me to use handlotion containing *lanolin* to protect the skins,
I have not found this word lanolin in the search database for this site,
my first question was with regards to saddle soap.
help?

In my opinion, hand lotions (with lanoline or not) are too thicky, too "nourishing" for the natural heads care. I would recommend linseed oil. Normally, if you play every day, the moisture and grease form the hands is enough. But it can happen that after one or two years, the heads tend to slightly dry out. So, the aim is not to protect skins but to keep them elastic.
Loosen bolts, distribute some linseed oil on the head evenly with a cloth, so that a very small layer is distributed both on playing surface and on head "shoulder". Let the drum sit for one night, to absorb the oil, then wipe off the remaining oil with a clean cloth.
Tune the drum again, and you're done. OK?

Coconut oil ? sold as a cosmetic product or food product?
how come the drum stores i frequent dont have this stuff,
I have recieved extatic reponces from those ive mentioned coconut oil to. apparently this is used for numerious things.
got any brand names to recomend > or is that relevent.?

No I mean it's called "West African Palm Oil"...it is a red-orange in color, not coco oil. "JC" Johnny Conga.......... :;):

my teacher recommends getting a bit of beef fat from a butcher and rubbing it on the heads, let it set overnight and wipe off with dry cloth the next day. It has worked great on my heads. The only thing is the face of the butcher when you request that.

Coincidentaly my hand lotion has palm and coconut oil in it, (Pamers cocoa butter)

Your hand lotion might have those properties but it still has other chemicals in it. West African Palm oil is the best that I have come across outside of using manteca (lard)....."JC" Johnny Conga..... :;):

I use 100% purificated lanoline (it is very solid and sold in small tube, not so soft and greasy !) from local pharmacy shop (original for care of breast-feeding mothers). It works superb on conga heads (aprox. once per month) and on Matador bongos head (I used lanoline more extensively on new bongos). Bongo heads had become "thicker". I rub in allways in high tune position, because, the tension helps to strech and reveal micro spaces in your raw head. No smell or strange odour at all (Babies are sensitive !).
That´s my experience. Does anybody have similar advice ?

I have always used "epo" (manteca de corojo) on both my hands and skins! No ay mas na'!
I tell my students to get some for their hands and skins also. There are some great healing properties in it which help to heal cuts if you have them.
