My next size? - What would you suggest?

Ok guys as some of you may know from previous posts of mine, I went with the Meinl Luis Conte artists series congas, I first started with the 11' quinto I was going to work my way up to a 3 drum set what would be the next drum you would focis on the 11-3/4 conga or the 12.5 tumba? In case I get stuck at 2 drums for a while longer then expected which pair would suit me best the 11 and ????? Not ready to buy just yet just wondering for when the occation arises.

are you playing strictly salsa? Or other genre's?

It really depends on what you are trying to achieve. You could use a tumba in place of a segun or vise versa for modern stuff other than forklorico. But if you are going to be doing more traditional rumba etc, you may need to have all three. But then again, you most likely will not be playing all three in a rumba etc.
Ok now that I confused you more

Its really up to you, I would get a tumba just because it costs more. Get that out of the way.

well for now these congas are going to be used at home for latin jazz practice, things like tumbao rhythms, I guess salsa sooner or later I will be learning new things as I go. I may end up with all 3 but I still may decide to stop at 2 for now so I want to be sure I have the right one to stop on for mainly chachacha 6/8, tumbao styles.

Do you think I could do more things with a 11 and 11-3/4 drums or with 11 and 12.5 drum set up? Remember I already have the 11

In your situation, I personally would go for the 12.5. I think it would give you a more versatility, a bit more tonal range and maybe deeper bass sounds too. You can tune it up or down as the music situation demands.

Hello Bataboom !
I agree completely with Pavloconga - more versatility for shure with 12,5 ! I play Meinl Marathon classic Quinto and Conga, tuned in thirds ("C" - "A" - for example) and I miss some deep bass.
On the other hand - high position tuning will give you more presence within the rhythm section picture (with slaps and open tones on both drums, not only open stroke acceting with lower !)

Abure Pavloconga couldn't have said it better, having the tonal range at your disposal is what is critical. You can change the tones with tuning, but only so far if you're needing more bottom. The conga will sound more like an oatmeal can the more you loosen it up, where as I personally have tuned a 12 1/2" LP to the pitch of a conga and it gave me more "real estate" (head surface) to work with!

I would recommend the tumba, and later when you go for the 'segundo' you'll have developed an ear for where (pitch) it should be tuned at.

yeah thats more what Im leaning to the 12.5 tumba I really like the 11' quinto has great sounds, the 12.5 along with it should make the set sound great together.

Hy how are you all doing today , my best to all of you. I also have a set of meinl exclusives a qiunto and conga . I think you should get the tumba because you may want more bass as the other guys suggested . They are right on that one like always its good to consult with the brotha's here . I am also missing that tumba feeling ,but i am going to upgrade instead of going to the tumba .
