Yup as much as I love it, I have decided that for my playing conditions here in the south that I will go with a fiberglass shell with a synthetic shell. I have it listen on ebay with a buy now only at a steal of a deal.

ebay is quite a competetive marketplace so I have set my price and shipping at a very good deal compaired to the price of one at a store or online retailer where your looking at at least 50.00 more in cost plus 30.00-50.00 above that in shipping.

Just thought I would throw that out there.
I have quite a number of people watching and
inquiring about it. So If your at all interested
you might want to jump on it.

I took JC's opinion on the bobby congas by pearl, and got cold feet about selling my Luis model conga. Sorry I stopped the sale on ebay and I will keep the drum and just ad to that set. It is the drum I play at home and will have the time to tune it. Opposed to my church set which I have to use nuskyns on because of the weather and tuning situation I have there. So I figure I can stick it out at the house with rawhide and wood as my home playing set.

pidoca, I love the Luis Conte conga the original head as great it has a really nice feel and an awesome tone. Even to look at the head looks way better then some others I have seen on higher priced drums like LP, Toca, Pearl etc. The shape of this drum is awesome has a fat belly the meinl site states its shape has the more traditional cuban look and feel. The drum is pretty heavy even for a quinto. When I get the tumba that thing will be a tank! But it plays great and the tone is really awesome at any tuning.

I didnt put a remo skin on this drum, I have a mienl headliner set that I play on at church, thats the set I put remo heads on because of lack of chances to tune up before each time I play them. As for the remo heads you can not subsitute the sound and feel and tones of rawhide skins. These remo are doing the job I am using them for, I did not get them for the sound or the looks but the purpose because they dont stretch or shrink in humid weather conditions.

The Luis Conte congas has the traditional rim hoop which I really like feels great and looks great to me allows my hands to get closer to the drum and I find thats more comfortible then the comfort curve rims. I paid 190.00 for an 11 inch quinto from a US online music store.

I can only compair them to what I have already played and thats the Meinl Headliners and LP conga and I find the Luis Conte a far better sounding drum and feel. I just love the way its shaped, adds to the tones of this great drum im sure.

I play Meinl Pros and love them. Very well made and the hardware is alot larger than LP. I have the quinto, conga, and tumba. The factory heads (water buffalo) are doing a good job on these drums. I think that if I were buying again though, I'd go with LP Traditional Fiberglass.

Skin Deep and Bataboom,

I agreee that Meinl has some really nice products. I am thinking of changing from Mongo santamaria congas to the woodcraft series or maybe even the flotunes. Any thoughts?

or the other idea is to go for a cheaper set and get mule skin put on.

Where is the best place to get the mule skin from?

Bataboom, I spoke to luis conte the other day and also my supplier about the "luis Conte" congas. they both said that they were like the marathon series with better heads and the traditional rim. It was kind of taken aback as the marathon is the entry level conga.

the flip side is that it goes to show that the is quality in all the MEINL conga series, and it doesn't take that much to make an entry level conga sound professional.

your thoughts?

I dont think the marathon series are entry level more like a mid level model, the entry level congas by meinl are nino and headliners. But I think they may have met the that Luis Conte's were made after the marathons not really a direct clone because if you look at them you can see the Luis models look to be a little fatter in the belly. And have a little different look all together. Either way they are some great congas I love um! Even the headliners by meinl are great, they are not as great as the Luis models I can tell the difference for sure but at any rate great drums!

Hi Bataboom

Agreed on the luis conte congas being nice. I stand corrected on the entry level congas.

No offence intended but i think headliners are shit and basically unplayable.Well the ones ive seen anyway. The heads where so bad, they are basically a waste of money imho.Every student i have ever had that started off with these "entry level drums" replaced them asap for some a couple of houndred euro dearer and got some ok drums .Mienl classics and toca can be bought for pretty cheap and are perfectly good tumbadoras. Most students complain about there headliners as soon as they get very basic technique.

Again, no disrespect to people who play these drums .But a far as drums go we all know whats good and whats not .Cheers.Niall g.

I guess it can boil down to how mush you desire to play, regardless of budget constraints. Frankly, I play the hollow support columns in our church basement with positive and amazed reactions from the other musicians. I also play the trays, the tables, the chairs and any other surface with multiple different sounding tones. I honestly think any drum can be played if you take its limitations into consideration and play it where it will sound right. For example, it might be a bad idea for a new player to bump his headliners up next to a seasoned player with some Gon Bops and expect him/her to feel encouraged by the tone of the headliners. On the other hand, those same drums can be recorded with good results after some careful tuning. Again, not a good idea to A-B compare them with the expensive drum. Also, some new heads can really change things. I think anyone with a heart for music needs to find a way to afford the music they have a heart for...pawn shop guitars, less expensive congas, homemade shakers and cajons...whatever it takes. I made chimes out of 1/2 inch copper water pipe. They sound great! and they cost 12 dollars, and sing like magic. I made a horn out of pvc pipe. I play it like a swiss alp style horn. If it makes a sound, I say play it!

God bless!
