Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the 35th anniversary limited edition Fiberglass congas. I'd be willing to bet that a Galaxy Fiberglass model would probably fit in with that 35th limited edition.

As I understand it, with the exception of the Palladiums and regular Giovanni Wood congas, all LP wood congas are made of the same wood (is it Siam Oak?) and all Fiberglass of the same materials, and , at least for the recent past, have been all modeled in the Patato Valdez Fiberglass prototype size (this is lore I've heard from Giovanni himself, and from other percussionists in the know)

The Giovanni's REGULAR ones are made from NOrth American Ash and apparently have a better tonal ability than LP's professional wood line, the Classics. But you know what...Giovanni Hidalgo himself took my Classics (chose them, out of 8 available LP congas, fiberglass models and woods) because he liked their tone for a gig I collaborated with him in. So, there you have it...Gio himself is perfectly willing to use Classics, although he prefers his own line.

I would think that it's a waste of money to go and buy Signature models (unless it's Giovanni's, and even then, I'm not willing to spend extra bucks just for a little more sound increase).

Either get a regular set of LP Fiberglass or Patato congas (if you want Fiberglass) or a set of Wood Classics, and that's pretty much the standard offering from LP. You're not get much sound difference between different "signature" models made out of wood by LP (in the same class, not between beginner-intermediate-pro levels), so why pay more just to have a guy's name on the conga?

As for heads, I've tried LP rawhides, Evans Synthetics (which used to be LP's official synthetic provider (is it anymore) and Remo Fyberskins.

I SWEAR by the Fyberskins...the rawhides tended to not last me long and I couldn't get the crackling highs I wanted...the Evans had a mute triangle in the middle that would kill overtones (similar to NuSkyns by Remo), but would leave the conga sounding like a cardboard box. The Fyberskins feel and look like real skin, and they were the only heads to give me crackling highs and slaps. I'd recommend Fyberskins, and a lot of people here love them for their great balance of longevity and authentic sound.

Hope that helps. :D

Hi Rolin,

Hope all is well! Try E-bay, occasionally some LP's 35th Anniversary drums appear there for auction. If that doesn't work, you might want to order the conga directly from:

LP Custom Shop

You will want to order in "Blue Glitter finish" to match your 35th's. Regarding drumheads you need to order heads that fit LP's Comfort Curve II Extended Rims, CCII rims came standard on the 35th's.

Hope this helps!

Rolin,

Way back during his Batacumbele years Giovanni used to play on fiberglass drums. Actually his were quite similar to yours 35th Anniversary drums but with traditional rims, see attached photo. However, this days all his signature series drums available from LP are in wood.
