If a music store orders a set of LP Original Fiberglass congas, can traditional rims be specified as opposed to the Comfort Curve ones or will this make them fall into the LP Custom Shop series?

Interesting you should say that, I have two sets of LP congas, both comfort curved, and a pair of traditional meinls.

Is there a difference in sound with comfort curves or is it just comfort, credibility and cosmetics?

No difference in sound Diceman, I too have comfort curves on my Palladiums, my new congas also have comfort curves.
Far more comfy to play on.

While my hands are acustomed to play pretty much any conga, I still prefer the comfort curve style rims.

Hope all is well! I don't think this will need to go through the LP Custom Shop unless you want a special finish on your drums. Right now LP Originals are available in two colors, black and red. I suggest you contact LP customer service at:

customer_service@lpmusic.com

They can provide you with accurate order part numbers for this drums with traditional rims.

I play traditional rims at home and CCR at church I like them both each has its own unique feel, the TRR's have thier own comforting feel to me but doesnt really matter I think the traditionals look cooler but I can play on either and the both dont bother me one way or the other.

I played traditional rims for years (Meinl Marathons) with no problems, but changed to LP Classics with Comfort Curves 2 years ago.

I must say, I've found little difference in the 'comfort' aspect of either rim.

Where I have had problems is in using rented drums (for overseas gigs, promoter rents them locally), and I often find that the drums have been badly maintained and reskinned with pre-formed heads that aren't a proper fit, resulting in the rim being almost at the same height as the shoulder of the drum. With any type of rim, curved or traditional, this is going to hurt - the moral here is to have heads that fit the drums properly.

Incedentally, I played Robin Jones's Timbas recently - they were a joy to play, and those traditional rims never gave me any issue.

I learned to play on traditional rims, and with the head below the shoulder, what a bitch that was; broke some blood vessels in the process. Comfort rims were not available then. At the time my instructor said that it was helpfull to learn that way 'cause you attacked the drum from the top and avoided developing bad habits, as hanging your palm on the rim and developing a nasty old callouse on the bottom of the palms as I have seen on some folks. Also gets full use of the life of the head. This is all true.

I tried out some Timbas at Quinto Music about a year ago. Once you find the sweet spots, they are awsome and thensome.
I had a little go of Robins at the 606 and they are well played in.

Back in the day when I used to tuck my heads I'd pull the skin really hard with two pairs of pliars until there was less than an inch between the top of the head and the traditional rim. It added a lot of playing time to the skins and kept the amateurs OFF of my tumbas at club gigs. After that nobody wanted to sit in but seasoned pros.
Comfort curve still sucks!! Anyone want to trade an old LP 11 3/4 for this comfort curve crap? I'll even pay the shipping!!!!!!!!!!!!
