i have a set of aspire congs and they dont sound very good at all. i dont play very often so i would prefer not to allocate too much money towards congas but would like to have a better sounding set.
can i make these sound better by getting new/better heads or should i just upgrade to matadors, and if so will it be a noticable difference and worth the extra dollars?

Replacing the heads would be the cheapest option.
1) Stay away from the LP replacement heads.
2) Remo does make synthetic heads for the Aspire line of congas.
I guess you could pay someone around here to custom make some mule skin heads or something.
Lastly, you could tuck your own using the same rings from your current drum heads. Go to RhythmTraders.com and buy steer skins ($70 each though). VolcanoPercussion.com has some good intructions on how to tuck your own conga heads.
You are looking at spending $50-$75 for each head.

Hey guys,
I just recently purchased my very first set of congas. I have the LP Performer Series quinto and conga. I also just purchased a Pearl "Elite Series" tumba which sounds great.
I'm considering changing the skins on the LP Performers over to mule skin but, since I've never done this before I was wondering how difficult a task this would be. Would you recommend I attempt this myself or hire someone to do this for me? Thanks!

It's really not that hard. Here's a tip to help you with drying. After tucking the heads, set the congas upside down on a plastic bag, that way the double area where the head is tucked will dry out first. Flip them over the next day, tighten a bit, and let the top skin dry.

Thanks for the tip pcastag, but whats the benefit of letting the double area dry first, I'm not so experienced with that, only done it with x-ray heads on bongos (tough job :p !!)

im not been playing for to long but if you want a good sound try the lp patato model.the quinto goes for about 425.00$ but they last for ever.good luck .P.S dont go matador u gone have to upgrade again in the long run.
