halo guys!

i need some advice about skin. yesterday i have bought a cow flat skin. my question is: after I soak the skin for 2 hours, I discovered a few white spot. what is that? what should I do to make the skin even better?

Solo are the white spots like a blister or is it just discoloration ?, If the skin is left too long in the water, some blisters may show up and this is not good news, do not touch them , place the skin on the drum , stay away from the spots, and let dry; If they break while wet, you may have a hole or a thin spot due to open up as a hole, and the skin is useless for that drum ; you may use the skin to make other instruments. If it is just discoloration nothing to worry about.

Greetings Solo

If the skins were dehaired with lime, what you have might just be some lime residue. This happens when the hide is not correctly delimed. When the skin is soaked in water the lime absorbs the water and becomes more visible.
If this is what it is, it will not affect the tone or life of the skin. I usually put a little handcream, that contains lanolin, onto the spots, this seems to lift the excess lime.

thanks for the advice.

i think, that's not a blister because they dont break either while wet or dry, nor a discoloration because I can't clean them up. the spot become greassy like squid while wet and become more visible and thicker than the other areas while dry, and I also can see like nerves inside the spot. what's your opinion?

I hope that you are all well my brothers/sisters!

I have changed the skins on all of my drums over the years and on occassion have experienced what you find yourself with Abure Solo.

The spot is real slippery and yes, it is whiter than the rest of the skin. I have seen this mainly with cowhide, but I don't doubt that it could happen in other types of skins as well.

I've never mounted these skins on my drums however, the spots have been on the skins that came with the drums in all of my cases. Also, the spots only became an issue once they (skins) were put in water. I don't believe that they will impact the sound, but I also never played/or used the 'spotty' skins afterwards either.

Here is a pic of a skin that came with one of my gon bops...................................which I changed. You can see the 'white spots' on the skin. The drum still sounded great however.

Are the marks on the grain side - smooth playing side, or the flesh side - rough under side?
Fat deposits usually occur on the flesh side, but can be seen through the skin. If the spots protrude above the rest of the skin when its dry, you can either scrape or sand them off. Dont mess with it to much while its still wet, you could end up with some serious holes.
Most inperfections can be removed or at least reduced with some fine grit sandpaper once the skin is properly dry.

thanks for the answer. the white spot is on smooth side. now the skin already dry, and sound well, better then matador skin, and the best things is the price. the skin only cost 9 US. thanks once again for the attention.

Hey solo

I am glad that the skins sound good.
I have been playing a set of matadors for about 3 years now. It took along time for the heads to break in. I wanted to upgrade the heads to LP hand picked, but at 60US I stuck to the original heads.
Looks like you got yourself a good deal.
