My conga's head is off center, which really sucks, but I am wondering if there is a remedy for that problem or do I have resort to replacing the head? the head is pretty off-center, one side of the conga tunes fine, but I can barely turn the lugs on the side that is off. So far, my only solution is to stop practicing. HELP!

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well!

As for "off centered", are you saying that the "crown" is leaning more on one side of the conga than the other? or are you saying that the conga is what is called "out-of-round?" The latter being the worst situation you could ask for.

If the conga itself has no problem, and you can't afford a "new" head, then you should consider Abure Olsongo's technique for re-mounting the skin. Take the skin off of the drum, soak it in warm water for a couple/few hours, lay it out on a flat surface and place the hoop on it once again. Use some string, and wrap it around the skin and the hoop, making sure to pull the skin up and tying it with the string. Next place the skin on the drum, place the "crown" on top of it and begin placing the 'tension' rods one at a time of course. There is a thread on this site which should give you a better picture of what this is about, do a search on "mounting skins".

Buena suerte!

evd, not all is lost. re-wet the skin an use my string technique to put it back on the drum. Look for my technique on other post in reference to skin placement.
Just make sure there is no rip development.

I love this site! There is no other Conga site I have found as comprehensive as this one.

Fortunately, for me, my conga is not "out-of-round," but the crown is definitely leaning on one side more than the other. Since the skin is already out of whack, I will try remounting it using Olsongo's technique. I have always wanted to try doing that.

Verticalgil, Onile, Olsongo, gracias mis hermanos!

Blessings from the Most High,

Abure Evd777!

here is a technique of mine which I use when 'cutting' the excess skin, it helps you out so that you don't wind up cutting what you don't want to (the mounted skin)!

Suave mi Pana!

Alafia Pavloconga!

That's a cow skin I ordered from Moperc out of Canada!
It really sounds great!
Keep in mind though, that the skin as you see it in the picture has been soaked in water for about 8hrs, when it dries it gets thinner. It looses some of the thickness that you see during the drying period.

Suave!

You could try just turning the mounted skin over and filling it halfway up with water then putting it into water up to the same level in a a tub until softish, so the flesh hoop bit is kept dry. I did this once with a badly fitting prelapped Bauer skin on a Classic quinto, and it worked a treat.

Worth a try and if it doesnt work, revert to the total immersion stylee.
