The founding fathers of the conga drum in an orchestral setting. Mongo was a bongocero but stated playing tumbadora in 1940. The tumbadora was incorporated in a conjunto setting in 1939 by Arsenio with his brother Kike and later Chocolate. El Colorao was ArcaƱo's tumbador around the same time 39' or 40'. Mongo started playing with Coj. Matamaros in theealy 40's, so tyou can call him one of the founding fathers with respect to the tumbadora in a conjunto setting. Before that time the tumbadora was used mainly in comparsas and rumba de solar.

Also the founding fathers as far as conga drumming in the States. Chano, Candido, Mongo, Armando, Sabu, Carlos Vidal,Luis Miranda, a bit later Patato,Francisco,Julito Collazo....these guys can be called part of the founding fathers of the instrument in the US. The tumbadora (conga drum) was exposed to the wide audience in an orchestral setting in 1939 and early 40's. Before that was used in rumbas callejeras, comparsas and folkloric music or rituals. I think that's being specific enough.

My brother Omelenco I have to disagree with you in relation of the tumbadoras in Conjuntos,or Orquestras...In the mentioning of founder fathers of bringing the tumbadore to the U.S....after mentioning Chano Pozo then everything in good,but.....Chino Pozo came,(1936), even before Chano Pozo and he was an all around percussionist,Conga,Timbales, and Bongos, also there is two more percussionists which play congas and Bongos which jazz players before Chano Pozo.who are they?....In relation to Cuba the honor goes to Miguelito Valdez,Santos Ramirez,Oscar Valdez Sr.,(the father of Oscar Valdez of Irakere Group)....Arsenio Rodriguez formed his Conjunto after recording with Miguelito Valdez and the Conjunto Casino de la Playa,(THAT"S THE PLACE WHERE ARSENIO FOUND OUT WHAT THE Congas COULD DO FOR THE CONJUNTOS), and took the idea to his Conjunto.Dr. Zaragemca

Querido Doctor,

Chano came in 1946 not 1936,he came because Miguelito Valdes encouraged him to come to NYC,as Chano had been shot in Cuba. He came with his lady Cacha and a friend rumbero Pepe Beque'. There is an 89 yrd old Cuban friend of mine, Diego Iborra that played conga with Dizzy before Chano, Diego came in 1931, Diego mostly plays drums, he still does, but played a little conga when the Be Bop movement was begining.Candido Camero also came before Chano.
Saludos, Dario

Brother Omelenko, you misundertood what I said,I know that Chano Pozo came in 1946,but I'm talking about Chino Pozo,(another cuban percussionist),which came in 1936, before Chano Pozo....Yes Diego Iborra is the other percussionists which play with Dizzy and 'Bird' Parker before Chano Pozo...Yes also Candido Camero came with a dancer/show,but he went back to Cuba and later in the second trip to the U.S.,that's when he started playing with jazz players...The congas was incorporated into the Conjuntos little early by 1936-7,(as soon as the president-Gerardo Machado was dragged out of office),he was the one setting up the prohibition of drums in Cuba.I always enjoy talking to you since you have pretty good knowledge.Dr. Zaragemca
