ho everybody

we have been to frankfurt musikmesse what happens to be one of the biggest events of that kind in the world. 1600 exhibitors (compared 1500 at this years namm show).
hall 3.0 - percussion and drums.

too much of course to tell, some details worth mentioning though.

pearl
i tried the new compact thing, it is quite good natural sounding, warmer than lp compact. also tried the conga/kickdrum thing. sure i dont want to play on that drum. the pearl elite congas professionally good, those richie flores drums quite ok, the folklorics a bit disappointing by dull sounding very thick plastic-heads

lp
no matadors at lp stand at all. but 3 different aspiresets
1 performer set, 1 single classic, a set of palladiums, in front the gio compact. no reason to stay longer.

dw/ gon bops
first time i put my hands on alex acuna gon bops. wunderfull drums that, the bongos as well. priced at about 2400 euro a 4set.

sonor
the latino series comes with lugs 8,2mm strong, well build shell, good skins, good sound, really professional drum, priced about 230 euro for 11/34. cheap for what you get.
the champion series i would name the best full size budget-drums i have seen till now. cost about 110eur each, skins are not that bad, no problem mounting better skins, the rim 2mm and lugs 8,2mm (comparable to lp classics standard). they have them 11 1134 and 1212.
seems sonor is becoming considerable possibility.

meinl
nothing new, alltogether disappointing, no topline drums (just woodcraft series somewhere above your head on a shelf)

tycoon
worth thinking about that one too. saw them last year first, seems they have some good distributers in germany now. good drums, solid hardware, good skins at mid price.

bauer
missing completly. dont know why yet.

remo
nothin new or i didnt see. was too busy comparing skins for my timbales.

what else?
lots of traditional african drums, mainly senegal style.
lots of timpanys from somewhere in asia.
not one top of the line timbales at all. poor.
lots of people running around, said hello to some people i know.

a bit tired now

Zwar!

Seems like a nice walkabout through percussion world though!
I haven't been to Frankfurt's Musik messe yet, but I know that is HUGE, that's why I'm a bit surprised when you say how the firms are coming up with nothing new. Even though there's no new products, many of them could afford some workshops or something to make their booth more groovy and interesting...

I have an idea: What if some of us meet next year in Frankfurt's musik messe and we have a rumbadrink or two :D ?

ho gurupimpi

would of course be great, to meet some of you guys there. would give the text a face and voice. sure we had fun.

i already postet the suggestion (on march 18) here. no replies though. maybe next year.

i do recommend not to choose the public day, what is the saturday, for visiting musicmesse. it is totally overcrowded then. if it is difficult for somebody, getting tickets for the non-public days, i can manage that if i know 4 weeks before.

greetings

Zwar, did you also have chance to try Sonor's "Global" series congas and bongos? They have gonbops style rims, and also seem to be entry level series

ho guru pimpi

the global series is not full size. they are 10" 11" 12". would mean to play on 10" as main drum when playing standard 3set setup. too small.
i like to play on 1212 1134 1212 or 1134 1134 1212. i have got some 10" drums here, quite good ones, cant say i use the often, not even when giving lessons.
i allways recommend full size drums for hands of a normal man. i daresay its better to take a second conga instead of quinto when playing 3set.
at all those global drums are not cheaper than the champions, and the rim looks like gon bops, but is not heavy duty.

Greetings

Hi Zwar, I visited the Musikmesse in 2005, so I wasn´t interested to go there this year. There are not enough news to take the long journey to Frankfurt every year.
But in 2008 I am really looking forward to visit the Musikmesse again. Perhaps we´ll meet there :;):
