Now that Pearl, LP and Meinl all have cradle stands, which are the best? It looks like the new Meinl stands are pretty cool, easy to adjust and they fold up well. Any opinions?

I've tried Pearl's new Craddle stand called "Kick stands" and they are great. Much easier than their old "fold around" type of stands. Is very easy to assemble and easy to adapt. It comes also with a carrying bag.

As a Pearl endorser, I told them why "black" instead of chrome. I was told a cost reduction.

My understanding is that is much cheaper than Gibraltar or LP.

Not sure if it is out yet since it came out during NAMM 2007. Usually productes presented in the NAMM of a January is available to dealers and public in April. Check with your Pearl dealer to try it.

I don't use stands anymore, but I used to have the Gibraltar low basket stands. I didn't care for them at all and would definitely not recommend them to anyone. I love Gibraltar hardware, I use it for everything else, and its solid as a rock, but these basket stands were very poorly designed. The fold-up legs would constantly come loose no matter how tight I would tighten it. They did me no good having to constantly adjust to get the bottoms of my drums to stop touching the ground. They also stuck out on the sides a lot which made it difficult to set the drums up in certain configurations. Gibraltar does make some more durable stands that I wouldn't mind trying out though.

i ve got the meinl stands that come with mongos, and the cheap basketstands from lp. the meinls offer more stability and of course look better on stage, but i cant say, the lp ones cause problems (once they are put together, that one was tricky). do their job as well.
never tried them for seated playing. no experience there, because i made some wood crosses for that purpose.

I'm interested in checking out the Pearl PC2000 Conga Kick Stand. I'd like to compare them to the LP Collapsible Cradle stands.

I've googled this item and can't seem to find them available anywhere yet.

Any help from you (or anyone else) would be greatly appreciated.

I saw the craddles in NAMM in January 2007. Products from "a NAMM" do not come to the public until April or May.

My understanding is that Pearl's new stuff from NAMM 2007 is arriving to the stores that ordered them.

If I were you, check with your local Pearl dealer. If you are checking the net, then check again or call the "net store" to see if they have them. The craddles should be one of the products that most stores will order since it fits all congas."

Check again and if not, let me know.

There are more than one type of "basket" or "cradle" stand available from LP. I found several on this page:

As for Gibraltar, they also have a couple different types. I personally have this one for my tumba:

And, I like it. It seems to be rock-solid, and I have not lost any adjustment on it. BUT-- one complaint-- it doesn't fold up without disassembling.... And, I think the corners stick out a little. But that hasn't caused me any problems yet.

I would be interested in a basket/cradle that is pretty much like the Gibraltar I am using now, but one that folds up nicely. Is there one out there?

I’m using the collapsible cradles from LP and they are very sturdy. However, I don’t understand why they must be so very heavy. Every time I took them to a gig my back hurts. Due to this misery I remembered me although that I didn’t forgot them. :angry: Nowadays, with the modern material technology, it must be possible to design a lightweight and strong basket stand by using for example composite materials or titanium (a bit expensive maybe) or so. I don’t know if the new Pearl stand is of a better design?

Titanium would be WAY too expensive-- several hundered U.S. dollars per stand...

Composite might work, but it would have to be some sort of plastic. Carbon fiber won't work, as it is prone to failure anywhere it gets knicked/scratched. And plastic may have its own limitations.

Aluminum would be the way to go for lightweight, BUT could they make them sturdy enough? That is the question.

I was using the LP Super Conga Stands but they were bulky & heavy. I'm not sure how well I like the Meinls yet but so far so good. Much lighter and fold up well.

How are the meinls compared to them, are they rocky or are there any other disadvantages?
The meinls are much cheaper here in Europe than the LP's, so I wonder how good they are!

Hi Tom, I had these stands before. The new LP collapsible stands are too expensive.
