Casa Cubana congas were made in Long Island, NY in the mid 70's, around 75'/76'. They were hand made by a guy named Frankie Rodriguez, along the Cuban Gonzalo Vergara line. I think the wood used was walnut and they stand 31" tall, taller than Juniors and Skin on Skin. I have a 12" tumba and will have it refinished by Cali at JCR, will take it to NYC on my next trip, sometime in Dec 07'. Here is a picture Moforibale ! Dario
The sideplates are set too high, but that's how it was made. I need for Cali to make smaller lugs or move them down about 1" . The wood just needs sanding and varnish. Saludos, Dario
Dario, thanks for the eye candy and the history behind the drum...Frankie Rodriguez, I assume this wouldn't be the late rumbero from Grupo Folklorico fame would it? i bet it has a nice sound, now that the wood should be nice and curao...
Is a different Frankie Rodriguez, not the one that played with Harlow,Grupo Folklorico or Zaperoko. Is a very good sounding conga is just tall, 31" instead of the traditional 30". Is the same height as the old Tom Flores Valje.
