I used lanolin, a light application followed by an hour in the morning sun then wiped clean of any that hadn't absorbed, on my Matthew Smith re-quinto and Tumba this week and I'm pleased with the results, I'm quite cynical and methodical about trying anything like this but really feel it has deepened the tone and the skins feel nice on the hands too, the re-quinto has a lightly bleached Valje Cow/Steer (?) from Ralph and the Tumba a steer that Matthew Smith mounted. I've had an on off relationship with both skins but really am now starting to get the desired tones from them as they break in properly and I get to know them better.
As a couple of regulars here know I've also had an on off relationship with these drums in general, I now put all of that down to my inexperience, I can barely take my eyes or hands off them now !

I also use Lanolin and I like it because it does not take much. I also tried some of that red palm oil from a friend at my drum circle and it works well too. It is a thinner consistency but pretty much the same results. I guess it's a preference thing and I like to use lanolin myself.

I have read a lot of threads about this treatment, but never tried myself. How do you apply it? Underneath? On top? How much time?

I applied it to my hands just like you would any hand lotion and massaged it into the heads, then with them loosened up all the way put them in the morning sun for an hour or so until the skins were warm, brought them in wiped any visible excess off and let them return to room temp before tightning and playing, talk about babying them eh ! I used a pure lanolin that I got at a health store in Berkekey.

Sorry to be off topic...
but would the Valje from Ralph be a restored vintage Valje or is one of his new Resolution drums?

The valje I refered to here was a skin I got from Ralph, I have a valje quinto and conga pair that are from around '79 I believe. Not restored but in lovely shape.

I have used lanolin for years, first on my Aspires then on my Toca Traditionals, two different types of head. I like it because it is a pure animal product, albeit from sheep.
I use the pure lanolin oil and just rub it onto the heads. I've also put it on the underside occasionally, if I have the heads off. I don't wipe off any excess, however, or I use my hands to wipe it off; normally, it will come off onto my hands as I play. Sort of serves a dual purpose that way. Even when I was playing at my peak, I never suffered from callouses.
At one time I use to mix in a commercially prepared lotion from a high end boutique. This acted like an emusifier, which aided in spreading the lanolin and helped it absorb into my hands better at the same time. Coating your hands with lanolin is like coating them with tar. And the aroma reminds me of my days in the horse barn in Texas.
Oh yeah, and I did like the sound of the drums after I started using it too.
