I am helping my step dad. He wants to re skin this Zimbabwe drum. It is one head of a two headed wooden drum he brought back. He is looking for a brown tanned hide. The Diameter is 20 inches. It is held on with 21 wooden pegs. Any thoughts and ideas to help? Getting a skin and putting it on would be great.

Thanks.

A drum like that is a beautiful piece of work and I wouldn't mess with it unless I really new what I was doing. The skin on it will certainly be from a local species of animal (could be antelope or steer), as is the wood it's made from. To retain the character of this drum you should replace the head with the same type of skin that's on it now. You would need to do some research to find the name of the drum and the ethnicity of the people who play this style of drum. That would help in trying to figure out how to carry out any work on it.
If you check in the forum Conga Set and Accessories" you will find a lot of valuable contacts for skin suppliers. I hope this helps...
Good luck, and please keep us posted!
