The inside was coated with wax, here is a shot of some of it that is pealing off.

The bracket was a custom job, in this shot you can see the braze/weld. Hard to say if this was done by the manufacturer or not.

The washers were ground down flat on one side. I'm not sure why, it doesn't stop them from spinning. Maybe it was so that can try to have them seated flush on the showing side, but it doesn't really work.

I am guessing that this drum was used in a California based 60s/70s progressive/psychedelic/rock band. I would love to find out which one and see a band photo with this drum!

Cool drum, Definitely a nice little find. I have had over 10 kings in my life and just don't think your drum is related to a king. 28" height is not King Conga height. A King Conga is approx 29 1/2 to 30" in Height. The bearing edge is not like a King, and the Bottom is not like a King. King Conga heads came in 4 sizes..9 1/2, 10 1/2, 11 1/2, and 12 1/2". Any other King Conga "Veterans" want to add anything?

I have enclosed a couple of pictures of a King I have restored. You can see the shape of the shell. The picture with two drums shows the King on the right. This is a 10 1/2" conga size.

After seeing all your pics of the drum, I agree with The Breeze. Could still be a nice drum, but the connection to Kings is not as direct as I'd previously supposed - mostly just the crown, lugs, and it being fiberglass.
I'm looking at my Kings now and comparing them with your pics and they're quite different. I'd take pics but I can't find my camera.
- The bearing edge on Kings is very distinctive and quite different from the white and red drum.
- The bottom lip is different on the inside.
- The texture of the inside is different.
- The profile is very different, without the distinctive King flair towards the top.
- Square nuts inside! (Wow. How late were those used? I think this came up before on the board and no one really knew, as it probably varied by region.

Kings are made in two halfs with a seam running from the top to the bottom of the drum vertically, not to say they didnt try other methods.
With the pics... it looks like a King rim on some random, perhaps japanese or something fiber drum.
