I believe ( i may be mistaken) that Mario uses steer skins on his drums...top quality...i don't know first hand but he's working on an okonkolo for me and for that he uses kip skins....

I think I've read in a more recent post that Mario uses black angus skins? Thats why his skins are so dark.

Possible additions to the list:

Rhythm Traders in Portland, OR... for conga's they have waterbuffalo flats as well as some pre-mounted waterbuffalo for their own conga's (the flats might prove useful for someone somewhere on some sort of drum project). They also indicate that they carry steer flats, but at the moment I'm writing this, they are out of stock. Still could be added for future reference. They probably carry other types of skins as well, since they deal in several types of world drums.

Here is the best place to go to in the San Francisco Bay Area. I have been going here for years and the great thing about it is that they let you go upstairs and pick out your own hide which will be a 1/2 cowhide rolled up. These are great hides and many of the drums in the Bay Area and all over the country have these hides on them. You will pay in the neighborhood of about 85 dollars and a hide will usually yield you about 4 or 5 large skins and a couple of smaller ones for bongos maybe. It's a lot of fun to cut your own pieces out of a hide and very rewarding as well. Just take your time and pick out a nice one, thick if that's what you want. I have held this secret for a long time and have told just a few people about it but now it's time to share this with everyone.

Ok. So I have been heavily involved in buying rawhides for my drums and other drummers. Yet there is still a confusion I am hopeful someone here can help me.

The question has to do with 'thickness units of measurements'.

mm - When I order from Bill Confer at Tejas Industries I order my skins anywhere from 45mm to 65mm. When I ordered mule skins from El Greco, he said the skins were 1.9mm and 2.7mm.

ounces - When I order from Hermann Leather Co., they deal with thickness of skins by "ounces". For example, their steer hide is 5/7 ounces.

Can someone help me understand why there isn't a standard unit of measurement that is used universally and what each means.

Ive had the same issues with OZ and mm... and anyone i have talked to at the tanneries i am connected with cannot give an answer. However i think i have come to a conclusion on my own after getting some unusable hides that were too thick... 5-6 oz if they are consistant all the way through work great for MOST Drums...

With that if you are in the market for hides let me know I have a good line on Cow/Steer and some other good hides for bongo and bata.
If you are in the NY NJ area i can also put the heads on for you if you dont have the time or the patience...
I can also take on a refurb/refinsh project or two come the spring.

So I guess it is still unclear on how "mm" and "oz" are used by different people!
Hopefully someone in this forum will give us some enlightenment on the matter. I am confident someone will!!

As far as hides are concerned, so far I am pretty satisfied with the skins that I have access to. Then again, I am ALWAYS searching for better deals ($). If you don't mind me asking, where do you get your cow/steer? In the NY/NJ area? Do you mind telling me about prices? You could PM me on it. seisporocho@mac.com

I ordered some cowhide from Hidehouse in CA and I am waiting on the order to see their quality compared to the price. If it's good quality, then I find them quite inexpensive in comparison to other avenues I've tried.

I have a connection to puerto rican cowhide that is really inexpensive but I don't think it's a skin that works well with every drum. I order all the time from Moperc and Bill Confer in Texas and those are fantastic skins. El Greco is great, but unfortunately little expensive for us US residents! JCR mules are also expensive even though they are high quality. I think thick Bison Buffalo is great for tumbas eventhough that's also a bit expensive ( I am currently finding better sources for that as we speak!). I have a contact that gets venezuelan cow and that tends to work really well too.

I used to get Colombian cowhide here in MIAMI and it wasn't the best (they wouldn't last very long since they would have to be stretched more than normal to get a tone/sustain and it tended to be a soft hide) so I stopped getting it.

Below is a picture of the skins I have for my customers here in miami. Each one has a different price, depending on the type and cost of course. The puerto rican cowhide is not there... they are white with black spots. They are cool aesthetically!

Thanks for the offer on the mounting but as a skin aficionado, I do mount skins for drummers and myself! I am also fixing shells and learning about woodturning to make my own drums... It is a crazy endeavor...

Let me know about your hides and their costs! I'm curious.

This measurement is an indication of the thickness of certain kinds of leather.
An ounce is of equal value to both 1/64 inch and 0.4 mm thickness.

Since leather is often used for clothing, they refer to weight in the same way as clothe fabric does.
That is a certain length of fabric is refered to by it's weight as a way to indicate how thick or
heavy it is.
Like the expression "heavy weight fabric".

But what I still don't quite get, is that with Bill Confer you can order 45 or 65 mm for congas and tumbas. Let's say it's actually 4.5 and 6.5mm...then I would imagine 2.40mm would be a thickness better used on a bongo or bata. But when I ordered from El Greco, he send me a 2.7mm and it was exactly to what Bill Confer would send me for a 55mm.
Honestly, it might be that Bil Confer has a different system and that's why I am confused. He was the first distributor i ordered from using any measurements for thickness. Usually I would go to a local guy and just pick up the hide myself and walk out the door.
