I love the way the gios turned out. the traditional rims just puts the iceing on the cake for me. i love the look and feel of traditional rims myself. I'm currently working on an old matador quinto and I'd like mine to turn out like yours if possible...I'm just thinking of keeping them the blonde wood color though.
So tell me...
1) How did you sand them down (what grit did you finally use and did you hand sand or use a orbital sander...)
2) What stain did you use and how many coats?
3) What varnish? -thats some nice gloss shine on those bad boys... :D
4) Did you buff them for that smooth furniture finish?

Vaya SalseroBoricua71!
Como esta familia?
Espero que todo este bien contigo!

Chacho! Esas tumbadoras estan "goddeme!" :D :D

I know you must feel like a proud papa as you should, they are proof of your hard, tedious and patient work. GREAT JOB!

I kept stepping back and admiring the beauty in each of the drums I refinished as I got further and further into the task. Then finally, "Bamm" they were done and I was playing them once again. Se que deben de sonar tremendos con los cueros de Isaac!

Suave Papa!

Onile!

Wow, incredible job, SalseroBoricua, my deepest congrats to you too!

Just one question: Which traditional rim did you mount on the GIovannis?
As far as I know, they come with this "extended" comfort curve diameter,
so I´d like to know which LP or other rims you took.

Enjoy playing those beauties!

Best regards
Mike

salseroboricua....

thanks for sharing the photos...I myself and working on putting some life back into an old gon bop that has seen its share of rumbas and has the battle scars to prove it....it originally belonged to a brother named Kwe Yao out of NYC....my friend Danny Diaz inherited his drum when he passed, and it has seen better days...apparently Cali had retrofitted a rim, and possibly an alma...(for some reason I am under the impression that Gon Bops did not make there drums with almas at the time) in any case, there are a couple of cracks at the bottom of the drum that seem to have been repaired as good as can be, but before the cracks where still really obvious...i have sanded them down along with the rest of the drum and will be sanding some more this week. Also the metal bands were brown and rusty, that too I sanded down as best I could...anyway i figured I would post my progress so far......I am thinking of painting a dark brown, and finishing off with a marine varnish...I want a real glossy finish...I will be getting new lugs...and if the skins doesn't work possibly a new skin...

Hey does any one know a good source of quality lugs that are easy to get as the lp lugs but maybe a little cheaper?
