Tack Head Congas

Does anyone here own or have experience with these older style drums?
I don't mean the cheesy Mexican ones you see on eBay all the time, but
real instruments, the best available at the time
What kind of tacks were used? How thick was the skin? Were sizes of the 3 drums
smaller or larger compared to today? That kind of info is what I'm looking for.
