Hey people,

I've just ordered a pair of SonorChampion congas (11 3/4" and 12 1/2"), from musicstore.com, and I'm here seeking for your opinions on this deal.
From bongoron testimony, they're pretty good ("killer deal") for the price and level.

Does any one had, or has, a good "relationship" with a pair (or more) of these that can tell me about?
Just to contextualize you, my percussion skills are almost none: I'm one of those who only has the beat on the head or mouth, yet.

Bought the Blueburst (image below) ones... that blue just asks to be stared at  .

I'm looking forward for your comments.

Regards,
André

I was contemplating buying these congas before I brought my Pearl Primero Pro's and I searched the internet for days for a video of someone playing the Champion's. This is the only video I found. It's not the best video, but it's something. Congas always sound a lot different in person though. I believe that the sunburst conga is an LP Aspire, so only the two red ones are Sonor Champion. Here is the video http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fusea ... D=20852303

I hope I was of some help and congratulations on purchasing your first set of congas.

Hello guys/girls/etc.,

"Hope I did a good deal!", I said... the hope fooled me!
Sold them to weeks ago, the Sonor Champions. The hardware (metal parts) are not good at all and also the drum heads, just to irregular.
I tried a Remo fiberskin drumhead in the conga and the metal parts in the conga started to bend with the tension - it only has 5 tunning lugs.

Ordered last week a pair of LP Matador Quinto and Conga, in black, and this time I really "Hope I did a good deal!" :D. They didn't arrive yet but, from want I could read through the internet, every owner of these conga brand/models say they are very good - sound, construction, even the drumheads.

Hope they arrive tomorrow.
I'll post some photos when they arrive. I know that everybody already saw these congas but... you guys will see it anyway, because all of you are a bunch of conga junkies.

Take care,
Andre

Yes the Sonor champion hardware is way too thin indeed, really flimsy, perhaps even worse than LP Aspire!

By far the better choice, some congas you can build on. Enjoy your Matadors!

Hey Peuga,

You mentioned that the Sonor's 'only' had 5 lugs - that's pretty much what most (maybe all?) congas have. I'm pretty sure your Matadors will also have 5 lugs as well (haven't seen a set in a few years though).

There is a good possibility that having said 5 lugs are normal I may see lots of exceptions/examples come from the members :D

I love it, thank you my conga brother for telling it like it is :D .
I have no doubt whatsoever that you will be extremely pleased with your drums, you no doubt did a good thing. The drums have nice and "Hefty" hardware with good construction and the skins are good. Congatulations once again amigo.

There are some drums that have six lugs my REMOS, Quinto, Conga & Tumba all have six lugs. It can also depend on the size of the drum, my Quinto and Conga Skin on Skin's have five lugs but my Tumba has six.

I figured there would be some 6 luggers out there even if I'd never met one ... how bout 4? or 7?

However that may be a thread highjack so never mind - main thing I guess that relates to the actual post is that 5 lugs is not a sign of a poorly made drum in any way at all (in case Peuga gets his matadors and is worried about the 5 lug thing).

Hey guys,

They did arrive friday. Way much better sound, construction, etc., than the Sonor's. Couldn't be much happier with my purchase. 8)

Burke, you have a point here. I thought that both would come with 6 but I was wrong - only the conga has 6 lugs, the quinto has only 5. Despite that, the hardware seem to be very good, with very good construction details.

And here are the photos:
