Besides the fiberglass cover on the top part inside the drum and the comfort curve II rims, are they the same?

I agree with Salsa, the drums are no doubt different, shape, construction and hardware. Spend the extra cash and buy a drum that will sound and look good right off the get-go, you will not regret it

The Classics and the Matadors are basically the same, quality, shape and structure etc. The only notable difference is the bull shape hardware on the Matadors, LP did this as a promotional tool to boost sales. Matadors or Classics, whenever possible thats the way to go

You talking about Classic 2 or regular classics?

The classic II congas are not even close to being like the classics and are not close to being like the Matadors. Matadors and classics are similar drums as far as shape but the classic has better hardware and a fibreglass reinforcement on the inside where the plates mount. The classic II is a much lower quality drum than Classic or Matador. If you can't afford classics or Matador how about any of those two options used? Matador is less expensive than the classics and a very good conga. IMHO

I have a set of the classic II's, and even though they are my first drums as a beginner, I do regret rushing into a purchase and not holding out for the "real deal". I actually missed out on a couple of good deals on used matadors AND classics as a result.
I posted this before, but this is the exact response that LP gave me when I asked the same question a while ago:
"First, you are correct that the Classic II is a Guitar Center exclusive.
To explain the differences:
The LP Classic is a three ply shell with fiberglass reinforcement on the inside.
The Classic II is a two ply shell with NO reinforcement.
Both are made of Siam Oak.
The Classic has a full figured shape.
The Classic II has more of a tapered figure.
The Classic has the Comfort Curve II rim.
The Classic II has the Soft Strike (Comfort Curve I) rim.
Hope this helps."
The classic II's are ok for learning on, but don't expect the resale value, sound, or quality of matadors or real classics. I have switched out to CC2 rims, but I do not want to invest any more money into them. Down the road when I buy something better, these may be good to keep as beaters....haven't decided yet. Good luck....
