Postby JohnnyConga » Wed Apr 28, 2010 5:59 pm

Ok guys after u all showing off your beautiful drums, u made me do it,...mi socio Omelenko(Dario) had been after me for years to buy this drum from me...it was refurbished by Bongosero Martin Galagarza...the history of this drum is... I bought it in a pawn shop on Willis ave, in the Bronx, back in 1972 for 50 bucks and it was fire engine red...this is the only drum to make me piss blood playing it up to 11 hours, at the Rumba Wars of Central Park-NYC...I had the washers put on to strengthen the V on the Hoop...the skin has also been on it for over 25 years now and is mule...it has a Bass sound as well....surprising for a Requinto...enjoy!..."JC" Johnny Conga...PS this Requinto is over 60 years old now...

Can you guys believe that my friend's pops got one of these for free?! His neighbor was throwing it out because he had it for years, hadn't played it for years and was taking up room in his house. He thought since it was so old it wasn't worth anything so was about to put it in the garbage. Pete saw him throwing it out and was like "What are you crazy! Thats a JUNIOR!". So the guy just gave it to him. What a lucky mofo... :) I asked him to trade for my Isla requinto but as expected he looked at me like I was stupid. LOL!

Wow! Makes me wonder how many Juniors are sitting around in El Barrio collecting dust waiting to be trashed... I should set up spy cams. :)

you know that drum should not be played by anybody except those with great respect for its birth, is culture and the tradition it represents and who has the chops to make it "sing"

I have a drum that looks just like this and it has a sticker inside that says "Solis" made in Havana. I brought it back to life years ago as a do-it-yourself project before this current era of preciousness about these gems.
