In case any of you missed this great "Cuban" drum on eBay, I'm posting the ad here. Bidding starts at $700. As tempting as it surely is, I think I might just pass on this one - all yours!

-----------------------------------------------

CONGA DRUM BROUGHT FROM CUBA. VINTAGE. HAND-MADE FROM THE 1950’s

Starting bid: US $700.00

Conga drum brought from Cuba. Vintage hand-made from the 1950's.

PLEASE READ ALL THE INFORMATION THOROUGHLY

Conga drum brought from Cuba. Vintage antique collector’s hand-made crafted from the 1950's.

Vintage antique collective RED colored hand-made crafted conga from the 1950’s, brought from Cuba via Pan Am Airlines in the early 1960’s by someone’s older family members. Excellent quinto and re-quinto sounds. It is one of a kind, and a real collector’s item, in good condition for its use and years.

This collectible conga, still has everything original including the skin head, in order to preserve its collector value, but It would definitely need a new skin head, (if intended for playing), and some basic maintenance.

UNFORTUNATELY, THERE ARE NO MAKERS NAME, BRAND, OR NAME TAGS ON THE FRAME.

I used to have a Mexican drum that looked a lot like that, hardware, shell, and all. The skin was nicer. I bought it brand new in NYC for $55 in 1971. It didn't last long, I was a total beginner and my practicing must have sounded horrible. I lived on a top floor apartment on the lower east side and one day I came home from work, the window to the fire escape was open and the drum was gone. I never asked, but I guess my downstairs neighbor just couldn't take it anymore. La justicia de loisaida.

Orale Carnal!

That conga is as Mexican as it can be, no trace of Cuban black beans and lechon there, I see Guacamole only and bad at that. Ignorance is bewildering. Gonzalo Vergara must be turning in his grave. What an insult!

Apparently I'm not the only one to notice the bogus conga on ebay. The price started out at $1700. I contacted the seller with a simple question yesterday:
"The starting bid on this item appears to be $1700 (one thousand seven hundred US dollars). Is this an error?"

To which I got a reply today:
"Thank you for the great observation. It was definitely a typographical error from our assistant who placed the ad in a hurry. The price has been corrected and publicized. The starting bid is $700.00"

I sent a final message today:
"It is very unfortunate for you if you paid some amount for this drum to think it is now worth $700. This type of low-quality conga is readily available every day, in much better condition, here on ebay. A more fair price for one in great condition would be $70, but that would be too high for the one depicted in your ad due to its poor condition. Whether you are trying to scam a buyer, or whether you are unintentionally overpricing this item, the bottom line is that any buyer would be terribly victimized to pay your price."

It's all in another day's work of trying to make the world right.
Cheers,
BMac

He had the drum listed on Craigslist in south FL. I contacted him and informed him that if someone got off a plane with that drum from Cuba it must have have floated there from Mexico. I sold one not too long ago locally with a nice skin for $50.00 it didn't play or sound bad but it was not Cuban by any stretch of the imagination. This guy has been informed by many and IMO is being less than honest.

Don't matter anyways, won't sell. He's just spending listing fees.

I've never seen a cuban drum with that type of construction, however it does lok to be a fairly well made drum with a nice shape.

That conga is probably a Teo Dor, with a traditional style rim.
we had a thread on them a while back, but those examples had comfort curve rims.
The shell and the rest of the hardware in the ebay auction is the same as the other Teo in the thread.
I'm pretty sure it came down to these drums being made in the Phillipines...

This guy is knowingly lying for personal gain. Not cool!

I have asked the question in the open if he has proof this drum is authentic Cuban and not Mexican.
Let's see how he answers

To be fair, he doesn't say it's Cuban - only that it was, 'brought from Cuba'.
