Bongobilly,
There's a 2-page thread on various conga basket stands (complete with photos) that started early this year, entitled
"What kind of stands for congas? Basket stands or other?". (The thread even features 4 good photos of Abakua demo'ing his LP Collapsible Cradle Stands--including evidently passing the LP Palladium [the whale of congas] weight test [LOL!]--and another photo showing other variations of the LP conga stand: the Double/Triple Stand and Super Conga Stand.) The link is:
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=4691&hilit=gibraltar+stand#p47454I, personally, use and recommend for my 3 handcrafted congas (Islas) the Gibraltar GCS-M and GCS-L Conga Stands (see photo). (M is for quinto and conga and L is for tumba.) It was Mario Punchard, maker of Islas, who recommended them to me. You can use them for both standing and seated playing. They're heftily-made, very solid and stable. IMO, the design is rather sleek and not too busy. The downside is that they're not (easily) foldable, although the legs are easily removable. But, they're not very heavy either.
What I especially like about it is, unlike most other basket stands, this Gibraltar stand has a bottom brace that you can raise/adjust so that the conga can actually rest/sit on it instead of the conga being supported mainly by the 3 top rubber grippers. (The photo shows the brace fully down.) IMO, basket stands without a bottom brace and rely mainly on the 3 top rubber grippers for support can actually mar or dent the wood of the conga particularly if it uses softer, less-dense wood, such as the canoe wood used on my Islas. Consider not only the weight of the conga but also the fact that you're pounding on it when you're playing, thus effectively adding even more pressure and weight to it and, thus, pushing it harder against the rubber grippers.
With the Gibraltars, I use the 3 top rubber grippers mainly to affix the conga in place on the stand. The bottom line for me is: I'm very happy with them.
Best of luck,
