Hello I'm new in the forum and in the congas world.I would like to have a real good set of congas:gonbops,skin on skin... but I live in France and the costs of shipping are to much for me,so i think in buying the giovanni's model,nice ash shell and then have a cow or mulle skin for a deeper warmy sound.DO you think it's good enough lol!!

I Know you did,loli saw the pictures,really nice drums,in France it's possible and easy to have bauers,but I dont know if they beat giovannis,but I think I go for Giovanni model.

Defenetly beat the Gios, not to mention much lighter plus hand made and not mass produced, solid wood and not wood ply. There is a Music store in Switzerland that offers Skin On Skins, if you are interested please PM me and Ill be glad to get that information for you. Good luck.

It's true that Bauer are nice drums,very dry and deep soud,and yes they look more tradicional.But if I get some skins on skins for good price(dreaming ...) I dont look back.

Here is a set of 12 Ash wood S.O.S. that were Swiss bound at the same time I got mine in 10/2008

I have a set of LP Giovanni Palladiums, they're good drums, though a little heavy (I now have a little trolley to transport them into gigs rather than lug them by hand). Though I'm sure there are better drums. I think new skins will improve the sound.
I think the best thing is, is to try and play different sets and see what feels best for you as well as your budget.

Surely it makes sense to buy drums that are NOT endorsed - they should be better value since the company making them should have put their money into producing drums rather than giving it away to catch some of the reflected glory of 'top' players.

Pete Sampras' name on my tennis racket doesn't make me serve any better, nor does Michael Jordan's name on my shoes make me jump any higher - it's a marketing ploy guys, c'mon.

I had once jordan shoes,and of course i didn't expect to jump Higher,LOL,but they were nice shoes.My problem is BUDGET.
Like many others I dream on Math smitt,sos,gon bops..but for me it does make no cense that the one of the greatests conguero in the world be endorsed by some nasty ,ringui,heavy,ugly drums.They are not the top,but i gess they are ok for a limited budget,they are so many guys that play whit them,why???

I think it depends as much on what sort of music you are going to be playing.
I play the Giovannis in a wide range of music: Funk, salsa, jazz, pop, traditional percussion and more. They are good drums (and I've played a lot of congas, and I still own a set of Gon Bops).
The LPs have a nice response, good tones, bass and slaps if played right.
To my ears at least, they sound great in most situations - and if I need a different sound (which isn't very often) I have other congas.

As for Thomas' comment that because the Gios are endorsed by one of the world's top congueros they can't be as good value for money... to each his own.
Not quite sure of the logic there Thomas. I'm sure there are better congas out there, just as there are better motor vehicles - I'm sure a very expensive Porsche will outperform my old station wagon on many fronts too.

p.s. Maybe the SOS are the way to go especially if you can get them in your country cheaper (and lighter) than Gios!

p.p.s If I could get better sounding, lighter congas that cost the same or less I'd buy them too...
