I saw these amazing congas being recorded in studio for the Lost City soundtrack by Luis Conte.

TAKE NOTE: There are 2 different conga set being played.
2:40-3:47 set looks to be an older Meinl model - it has the True Skin™ logo on the skins.

3:51-End
One guy is playing the conga support part and Luis is soloing on the quinto.
The hardware and detail on the rim is amazing. The drums also appear to be a dark redwood color very phat shape.
Anyone guess what these are?

Hi Leedy2, thanks for the response.
Do the side plates and shape of the conga reflect that they may be JCRs too?

If you watch the video they have a tremendous sound!

Leedy is correct about the rim, JCR did have some limited grooved ones, however the side plates look a little too big for JCR ones... I could be wrong though.

The guy playing the tres golpe part looks and sounds like Lazaro Galarraga, not Andy Garcia.

This is what I know. Andy Garcia had a set of congas made at Cali's (JCR). The macho where Luis is playing "comparsa" is part of Andy's set. It was a custom made set for Andy by Cali, Junior may have been part of the business, as some years back Junior and Cali had a sort of partnership.

I finally got a chance to see the video. Sure looks like Lazaro G. on the tumba,,, I'd recognize that beard anywhere.
Not the tres dos though,, Salidor.. right??

Yes, it is Lazaro with the (other) beard, no he is not playing salidor. Luis Conte is on salidor for the first track, then on quinto. Orestes Vilato on snare then on bells, Lazaro on tres dos, not salidor. Play clave along with the Vilato's bell and you will hear how the tres dos fits in the same timing as tres dos in a guaguanco, but with more accented slaps and no bass on the bombo in the conga de comparsa. Salidor is tuned above tres dos for conga de comparsa. They are overdubbing 3 parts at a time, so you can't hear the whole rhythm together, but play clave along with it and you will see, as long as you get the clave in the right place. I didn't see them recording the bombo or rebajador parts, they probably did them first off camera.

Thanks Jorge, had to go back and check.. It sounded so much lower, and he's doing it Havana two tone style on a lower tuned conga, so sounded like the Tumba..

Seems they were working out an intro, or break- not overdubbing. But what do we know, we are not present at that time.
