Cleaning fiberglass drums?

Postby PRDRconguero » Mon Oct 04, 2010 5:54 pm

Hello all,

Can anybody recommend how to clean fiberglass drums? I have a burgundy palisades park set I want to try and get some of the cosmetic smudges off of.

There are some scratches I won't be able to get out but I want to do the best I can. I don't want to use something too abrasive...thanks in advance.

i got the quinto burgundy one like you have and a white conga, black tumba, started to just wipe them down with windex, maybe some car cleaning products since the nature of the paint and then wax. and leave them the way they are, to show the character of 40 years of drumming, use them for my BongoWillie Drum Tent.

Good call Willie, thanks. This quinto and conga will be my quality beaters I can bring anywhere. I got em for a fantastic price so even in this condition, they were worth it.

Thanks Cuco.....my one bedroom apartment doesn't leave me a lot of work room to do that kind of stuff myself. I will definitely keep it in mind though once I move to a different place.

I don't want to invest too much $$$ into them right now but I may down the road.

I think it depends on how you treat your drums. These don't look too bad. They look about like what they would look like if I had them for say six months :D

Otherwise, $50 would do it. You could find some good tips on car related sites, and can get a fine finish using rattle cans by just taking a your time. Just remember to get a can of elbow grease when you pick up your other supplies.

My friend,
I have been there, done that! Here is the cheapest way with outstanding results....Find a permanent marker or combination of markers close to the color of your drums, remove all the hardware from the shell. Fill the gouges with the pen or pens, don’t worry about the scuffs. Let the marker dry then apply a thick coat of Meguiars wax cleaner, let dry and wipe off, a small orbital polisher is better but a soft cloth will do. The cleaner will help blend in the marker, remove the scuffs and help smooth out the finish. Apply a coat of Meguiars Cristal Polish after to bring out the shine. Use a good chrome polish like Noxen#7 or Brasso on the lug plates, rims and lugs. A scrub brush will remove the polish from the lug threads. I know I'm new here but trust me I have done this several times.
Hope this helps,
Apollo

No problem Cuco; thanks for the input.

I appreciate the idea Apollo.....sounds like it may come out good that way. I may consider changing the color altogether but I have not decided yet.
