LP Galaxy Fiberglass

Postby mrhands » Sun Oct 17, 2010 11:34 pm

Anyone here have any experience with these congas? I was thinking about getting some because having wood congas worries me, I'm in Canada. Also, they are getting played and carrying them to and from shows, they get dinged up. But mostly I need something tough and durable... O and loud to keep up with the funk band.

Anyone own these? PLayed them?

Thanks for your time.

Heavier than normal. But if you dont mind overly heavy congas then no problems there.
They dont stay in tune, have lots of overtones & ringing. Plating on hardware rusts very quickly.
I encourage any new student coming to me for conga purchasing advice to stay away from them.

İ have a requinto and quinto that i will sell at a very good price. Shıppıng cost wıll probably be high tho includıng stand. They are ın the US & İ will be where they are in a few days. Like new - only played twice and kept ın temp-controlled storage since. Bought a new set of 4 for a special recordıng session - the bass player took the conga & tumba for hıs pay!! They look great and are bulletproof - probably bombproof. Keflar man - keflar.

New skıns stretrch - tunıng should be OK after the skıns settle down. I don,t think the rıng ıs any worse than any other fiberglass drum with CC rıms. If it bothers you - there are a bunch of fıxes lıke sponges or tape or change the rıms or--------

İf you want traditional rumba drums get somthing else. But ın a bıg hall these cut right through.

Thanks a bunch for the info guys. This changes my decision. What fiberglass congas would you guys recommend then? I like traditional hoops, however I don't know any fiberglass congas that have them anymore. I was looking into some remo Poncho Sanchez congas but they are hard to get a hold of. I wanted to look into some meinl fibercraft congas but music store hasn't gotten back to me on prices. There are some white fiberglass LP's with traditional hoops on craigslist, they are a bit older, a little bit marked up, for what seems like a great price ($400) How are the older LP fiberglass drums?

If they are the palissads park model they are great sounding tubs and not very heavy. Look at the label aor ask if it says palisades park NJ on them. 400 is a good price if they're not too beat up.

I've played these and other LP fiberglass drums. And I have found that I need to tune them repeatedly during the early part of a show - it's takes them quite a while to settle in. And the ringing and overtones are pretty noticable too. But I love the "pop" I can get from the LP fiberglass drums, so I put strips of acoustic foam inside the drum body, which mellows them just enough. And I show up at gigs early so the drum has a lot of time to acclimate to the room.
It's kind of a pain I guess, but man, they can sound good if you're willing to work with them.
My two cents.......

Yea he destroyed those hopes and dreams real fast :( 8) But may have saved me alot of money.
They are Palisades Park...My only dilemma is that this person lives almost an hour away.
Here's the listing for these drums..

For those I may drive up from Nova Scotia 8)

Even if you don't have a car, a day's rental might still be worth it.

Cheers

Hey Psych1....Where are you going in the US? The reason I ask is that if you are in NY area and wanted to take a look at those
Raul/ Requena? bongos I bought from Elvis you would be welcome to. I know you were interested but let me win them. I have since acquired a few more drums and there is one I really want to buy from Leedy...so I would sell this to you at the price I paid if you were interested. It really is a beautiful drum . I only asked because you were interested and I would sell at the good price I got it for. What are you selling the LPs for? What color etc.? Are they pallisades park? Enjoy your trip. Jacqui

MrHands - Go get those PP LPs, they are the ones you want.

Jacqui - Thank you for the good offer but I'm going to pass, at least for today, on those great bongos. I also just picked up some new/old bongos and am over my head - I should really start to sell and stop buying. The Galaxys are the $900 each blue sparkle fiberglass, I was thinking $700 maybe $600 for the set but seeing the low prices on these PP LPs and on Dario's Gon Bops I'll go down to $500 maybe even less - hell, the stand alone cost over $200. I'll be cris-crossing the US but the congas are in the mid-west so shipping costs will be steep. I also keep looking at Leedy's bongo pictures - I bet you and I keep drooling over the same ones.

I am seriously considering it...Does anyone know which Remo heads fit on these congas? I asked him about the sizes. He said 11'' and 12'' and about 29'' high. Do these dimensions sound right for these particular congas or is it more likely just 11'' and 12.5'' ?

Psych1.....Those blue sparkle are beautiful...I have seen them and a good price too. I have alot of drums now though and mainly just collecting vintage. Have a good time in the US. I would be very interested to know which bongos you are drooling over. Jacqui
