Very Rare Junior Tirado Drum

Postby docarroyo » Thu Nov 04, 2010 9:55 pm

You have heard Cuco mention as well as others that Junior had made some drums from old barrels he got from the Brooklyn Navy Yard not far from were he lived. These were among his first drums very early, the barrels were made of Oak as most barrels were. Some barrels were to keep wine some beer but most at the Yard were used to store hardware in such as nails, screws, washers, and that sort. Well guess what I found when I came home from work waiting for me. Yep I got lucky, it in rough shape and will need restoration but I belive she is a diamond in the rough. Some idiot cut the loops of the crown and theres rust and stains all over but nothing that Matthew or Cali cant fix. Im not sure the barrel bands are original but theres no evidence that there ever was any other bands on her. I'm going to clean her up and see whats up. Its a 12" head. I just wanted to share my good fortune with everyone here on the forum.

I used to go to Casa Latina with my father to by records and guitar strings. I also had a girlfriend around the corner from there on 16th when I was a little older Her name was Rosie Calderon (LOL). The Young Lords HQ was on the corner of her block. But Back to the drum Bro you need to write all this info down maybe get together with a couple of the other guys and write a book. Everyone could contribute photos and you could interview Jay and Mathhew and Martin Cohen and of course Cali has a million stories. Now when you become rich and famous don't forget I gave you the idea, HAHAHA. Gracias por la informacion. Junior was friends with my father too, we lived on Pacific and Smith when the area was puro Boriqua.

Dario y 6X8 I got from a guy in Brooklyn, It must had been sitting in a basement for many years its dirty and the metal has some rust but Its actually cleaning up well. Ive decided to just clean it up remove rust, repaint the bands and tighten up a couple of small splits. Of course I have to have Matt fix up the crown. I have spoken to friends in NYC and Puerto Rico and they said its a rare relic of a true artisian and should be kept as original as possible. I wish I had a romantic story about how I got it and that it belonged to some great Congero. It was just fate and good fortune along with timming that she came into my hands. Thanks for the interest guys.

Don Cuco the only thing Im able to find is the number 5, I even got out the magnifier and looked real close all over. Y de nuevo GRACIAS pro la informacion. I do not care what others say you know your stuff. I also know stories about people but was told to keep quiet so I do not cause problems.
