Difference between the Patato and classic fiberglass LP's?

I have the option to buy a set of black fiberglass conga's. It's a set of a Patato and Classic fiberglass (not the latest with round badge, but after the PP period with the rectangular badge) with comfort curve II rim.





Is there any difference besides the badge? The sound very nice btw

I'm pretty sure there's a difference in height.
I remember the Patatos were made as 28" tall and the LP classics were 30".
Worth checking though as I'm just going on memory.

No, it is correct, Patatos are 30" tall.

What I think is the difference is the Patato series has a smaller opening at the bottom of drum. My 11" Patato quinto doesn't like to stand up on its own. Just the slightest bump and it will topple over. I have been using a low stand for the quinto to keep it stable. The ones I have are the latest edition, only a few years old.

Judging from the shape of your drums they are definitely both Patatos. Someone must have replaced the badge on one of the drums with a Classic badge.

Apart from the shape (that clearly says Patato) a Patato is 2" taller than a Classic fiber.

Probably a wrong badged model from the factory (since there is no trace of an other badge around the current one or elsewhere on the shell)

Im very very satisfied with them (I like them more then the newer round badged model, on witch I played a few times too) Now waiting if I could get the matching bongo's from the UK and get the new 290S slide conga stand with the bongo mount.

Although heavy I loved the slide option from the 3 way version and the lower placement possibility.

Got a set of the square badged black Patatos myself. Love them for fiber drums!

How do you think the square badged differ from the round badged (newer?) ones? (didn't actually realize that they changed the shape of the badges until now)

I found them less melodic, heavier and less louder/articulated. I play reenforced music most of the time so a little volume is nice (as long as its melodic too)

The original Lp conga were 28'' tall in the fiber glass models

Patato model are 30'' tall

The Giovanni model 32''

The new classics are 30'' wooden models

Some of the differences are also in Hardware within the drum not only the height.

Possibly this badge mishap originates at the factory. They are indeed Potato models as is shown by the height. Lp made the drum molds of the lower half of the shell taller by extending the bottom a few inches but this resulted in a narrower bottom base / tone hole and made these drums unstable and top heavy, prone to slipping out from your legs or just falling over from a mild bump. Slingerland made a similar drum shell size in fiberglass but had correctly designed the height w/ a wider base / tone hole. They also used good quality Cow or Mule hides that made the glass shells project volume while sounding more like traditional congas, not having the bright ringing over tones of glass shells w/ thinner crappy Asian heads. Slingerlands had a strong top tuned crown but used a tympani lug side plate that had cast metal & had sharp edges that scratched adjacent drums. Aside from that, Slingerlands were a better 30" tall drum than Patato model but were never made as thick and strong as Lp had done to there glass shells as time proved the original Lp shells to weak and they tended to delaminate from tuning stresses.

Notice the original Lp comfort crowns, not the lower profile type II crowns ? These original comfort crowns are the strongest , most warp resistant crowns on the market aside from Fat Congas 1/2 round stainless steel crowns. They are rigid, they bite down and hold the head & skin wire very securely. Lp's mic claws fit the crown so you can use them w/o attaching to a tuning hook. These are the only Lp Conga crowns I like. The original Lp traditional crowns were prone to bending & warping. Once a drum has a crucial design flaw like that, I never use / buy them again. There are better designs & models that produce the great conga sound at a decent price. Lp is after all, just a name. Since I am not endorsed & /or under contract, I can play & represent any brand or model if it is up to MY standards. BUT these particular Lp glass drums w/ these crowns, are my favorite fiberglass drums. I traded Fiber glass Galaxy models for my 1998 Gon Bop congas & no LP conga equal to them in looks or sound in MY opinion

Yeah the narrow base isnt very handy when played seated (although I notice this only on the quinto) but I play standing most of the time.

I bought a new set of Remo Skyndeeps for them. I like the sound and the fact that I have to take lesser care to de-tuning.



Also bought 3 mic lug clamps (very handy, had them on my former sets as well) and ordered the new 290s sliding stand (used the tripple version before) with a 454 bongo bracket.
