MIGHTY MONGO AT HIS BEST

This video was with The Tropical Budah All Stars, a short live group put together by promoter Henry Montalvo. It featured a cast of the best, Charlie Palmieri on piano, Chombo Silva on sax, the best trombone in Latin music, Barry Rogers, Nicky Marrero on timbales....... and of course, Mighty Mongo on congas.
In today's world, speed seems to be what every conguero strives for, but the "sabor" that Mongo projected was very special. The tastiest strongest hitting conguero that ever lived, a lot of Afrocuban pride and heritage in Don Ramon. QUE VIVA MONGO!

How true! I saw Mongo at the Bottom Line in the 80's He got everybody's attention! They had to escort out this hippy dude cause he kept yelling out Mongo Mongo Mongo! Just before they took him out he brought Mongo A beer and Mongo passed on it. Mongo drove that cat crazy!

What has that got to do with Mongo? If that's a joke is not funny at all. That tune is "cruzao on the clave" Bien Gallego.
When it came to "saoco" on the skins, Mongo wrote the book. There is no better "swing", maybe more speed, but not more "saoco" than Mongo.

Listen to the guaguanco sections. The rumba clave and cascara are together, but the tres dos is on the wrong side of the clave. That style was acceptable in the US, Puerto Rico and Colombia in the 1960s and 70s before Mariel, but since the early 80s is now considered cruzao. Some of the older Cubans play that way (eg, a few early guaguanco recordings from Cuba and Candido even today), but that will get you kicked off the drum (or clave or guagua) in any modern Cuban rumba. Still seems to be acceptable in salsa in Puerto Rico and Central and South America. The montuno section is not cruzao, just the guaguanco sections. Recorded in Santiago de Cali, Colombia, 2011.
