conga - tumba or quinto - conga or quinto - tumba?

which two sizes of congas (for two drum set) is best in non-traditional settings (pop rock, pop hip hop and rnb) in your experiences? I'm sure it's a matter of taste, but am interested in hearing your thoughts. when I see most of the popular music performances on national tv (late night house bands, aware shows etc) that are non traditional, it seems it's a matter of personal preference. when a quinto is used in a two drum setup, do you pair it with a tumba or quinto or just go conga tumba? play lp classics. I know it's a funny question but I'm looking for input, when playing with or without a trap drummer.

For non trad I like quinto tuma, the quinto cuts a bit more in situations where you may have a bit more amplifacation or guitars.

Conga - Tumba I can tune my conga to sound like a quinto and that extra bit of playing surface makes a difference.

OLSONGO - i completely agree. having learned the basics on a conga (started with one drum), my hand is not accustomed to the smaller playing area of a quinto.

Because you can get a fatter tune out of a 12.5 even when tuned up, this is strictly for pop settings like you said, the quinto rides above the drumset, listen to the old funky marvin gay tunes with a conga player and you'll see what I'm talking about.

A quinto - conga setup can be fine too in some settings IMO...
Funky...
A fat tumba to your right is defo a better choice though.

Some more heresy:
A "screaming quinto" and a "fat tumba" may not be the perfect 2 drum combo.
But using LP sizes, an 11 inch and a 12 1/2 inch setup may be a very good spread.
I have an 11 inch, big belly, very "fat" tumba.
Another choice, is 2 of the same size tuned differently. Or, one with a thin skin and one with a thick skin.
It is all about how they sound together.

Yeah, that is what it boils down to in the end!
Soundwise, you would probably not hear much difference when you play those odd combinations
if the tuning is alright, rather how it
feels like when you play your set is what matters.
I feel fine with an 11" as center drum, for example, but with bigger hands that might be a problem.

I prefer conga & tumba for a 2 drum set up in funk, R&B, Soul, and pop situation. The conga is larger (you can get sounds) and it can sit into a groove easier than a quinto. Then when you need to cut thru you can use more slaps for the accents. I play more soul/R&B music than Afro-Cuban/Latin and I find the conga - tumba works best for me. I also prefer a conga-conga-tumba in a 3 drum set up, because the conga is versitle in its tuning.
